Volvo's new electric MPV to be shown soon/

V-Class Rival? New Volvo EM90 Luxury MPV Confirmed!

Yes, Volvo is launching a luxury MPV. Here’s an early look at the fully electric Volvo EM90, which could be positioned to take on the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (or, more specifically, the EQV)…
Volvo has confirmed plans to add a fully electric luxury MPV – set to be badged as the Volvo EM90 – to its line-up. The Swedish firm will whip the wraps off the new EM90 on 12 November 2023, opening pre-orders in China at the same time.

From what we understand, the newcomer has been developed with the Chinese market chief in mind, though looks likely to be offered in some other countries, too. If it gets the global green light, the Volvo EM90 may well be positioned to take on the likes of the recently updated Mercedes-Benz V-Class – or, more specifically, the fully electric EQV derivative.

A 30-second teaser clip (which, rather curiously, has since been removed from Volvo’s global YouTube channel) provides us with a bird’s eye view of the upcoming premium people-mover, showing 2 glass sections – a smaller traditional sunroof up front and a larger panoramic version for the rear quarters. Expect similar front-end styling to that of the likewise electric EX90 flagship SUV.

We also spy handles for (powered?) sliding doors on either side of the vehicle, along with distinctive taillamps and what appears to be an illuminated “Volvo” badge on the tailgate. Though Volvo has yet to confirm any specific details, we’d speculate the EM90 is large enough to handle 3 rows of spacious seating, perhaps with the option of captain’s chairs in the middle bank (judging by what we can see through the glass roof).

According to the Gothenburg-based automaker, the new EM90 has been “designed for you to make the most of the time spent in the car, like a Scandinavian living room on the move”. Volvo promises it will be a “place where you can connect with your loved ones, create, relax, work or just think”.

Volvo is working on a posh people carrier for China

Volvo has denied us Brits its saloons and estates, and it doesn’t look like we’ll get the MPV either

Big news! Volvo has announced that its first ever MPV is coming soon, and this is the very first picture of it.
It’ll be called the EM90 and it’s described as a “fully electric premium MPV” that has been designed to feel “like a Scandinavian living room on the move". A bit like IKEA on wheels. Probably.

But wait, Volvo has already canned all of its saloons and estates for the UK, so will we get the first people carrier? Unlikely.

“Initially, this model will be offered only in mainland China,” said a Volvo spokesperson. “There are currently no plans to offer this vehicle in the UK.”

Volvo teases all-electric EM90 minivan ahead of 2024 launch

it's not just a rumor anymore - Volvo is indeed planning to release a fully electric EM90 minivan. Then again, it was probably innevitable seeing that Zeekr, which is another Geely-owned company that uses the same SEA platform as Volvo, has already released its Zeekr 009 MPV in China.

In fact, the teaser shows a lot of familiar design elements. The sunroof for the passengers on the back, along with the door handles, side mirrors and the antenna, look like they are taken straight from the Zeekr 009. However, the taillights are more in Volvo style.

At first glance, the EM90 seems to be big enough to house a three-row seating and has sliding back doors. If the powertrain is identical to the Zeekr's (they will likely be based on the same SEA platform for EVs), we can expect a dual-motor setup with 534 hp output and 140 kWh battery while a more affordable version of the Zeekr 009 runs on a single rear-mounted motor and 116 kWh battery.

Volvo teases its first EM90 electric minivan

The minivan might seem like a relic from the 90s to some, but Volvo evidently doesn't think so. Brushing aside the SUV craze that's swept today's automotive scene, the Swedish automaker just gave us a little sneak peek of their upcoming all-electric minivan, the EM90. And judging from what we've seen so far, it's set to be a visual treat.

Released on the heels of a teaser video a month prior, Volvo turned to Instagram to parade a few more tantalizing images of the EM90. Scheduled for a grand reveal on November 12, 2023, these snapshots give us just a taste, hinting at what's to come.

The front of the EM90 boasts an illuminated brand emblem, perched proudly on a chrome-detailed grille. This aesthetic detour diverges from some of Volvo's other designs, such as the EX90 and EX30, which sport a grille-less face. But this intriguing chrome touch could be influenced by the Zeekr 009 model, which carries a similar style. For those unfamiliar, Zeekr falls under the expansive wing of the Chinese automotive giant, Geely, which also happens to own Volvo. The similarities between the two brands in the development of this electric minivan shouldn’t come as a total shock, then.

Yet, while the vehicles may share some design inspirations, they're certainly not twins. One standout difference lies in the tail light designs. The EM90 boasts a unique T-shaped light cluster, standing apart from the full-width finish found on the Zeekr 009.

Volvo's EM90 electric van leaks ahead of the announcement

Volvo briefly teased its first all-electric MPV, the EM90, and we expect the vehicle to launch sometime in 2024. The Chinese MIIT, however, couldn't wait any longer and revealed some key specs as well as the design of the vehicle.

The EM90 is an interesting one as this is the first time the company ventures into the MPV segment. And as previously speculated, the EM90 is based on Geely's SEA platform, which is used for the making of numerous Zeekr models, including the Zeekr 009. This SEA platform also underpins the Polestar 4, Zeekr 001 and Zeekr X as well.

Volvo EM90 interior teases a 'Scandinavian living room' experience

Volvo has began the hype campaign for its all-electric minivan, the EM90. As official unveiling nears, Volvo delivered a glimpse into the interior, which it says is a "Scandinavian living room" on wheels.

The EM90's stretches out over a length of 5,206 mm, a width of 2,024 mm, and a height of 1,859 mm. This size not only gives it a commanding presence on the road but also enables a spacious cabin that is the most expansive Volvo has ever offered. The vehicle's dimensions nudge it just above the Mercedes EQV, in fact.

Beneath the floor, lies the beating heart of the EM90 - a 272 hp rear electric motor. Volvo's heritage of safety and performance suggests that a four-wheel drive variant may be coming at some point later in time. The EM90 shares its SEA platform with the Zeekr 009, but Volvo's car brings unique design cues, such as the iconic "Thor hammer" LED headlights and an illuminated badge.

Volvo EM90

In a fast-paced world, full of demands and obligations, it's sometimes hard to find the time and room for life itself.

With the new, fully electric Volvo EM90 premium MPV, Volvo wants to unlock a space for living. It's a car that is designed to be a space where you can find time to connect, think or just relax. To spend time with your loved ones, find peace of mind and enrich your life.

The new EM90 offers the next level of premium experience on top of everything you'd expect from a Volvo car, with iconic Scandinavian design, 96 years of safety heritage, ultimate comfort and cutting-edge technology.

"It's an age-old cliché, but there really is no place like home," said Jim Rowan, chief executive of Volvo Cars. "A place to connect with your loved ones, to truly be yourself. It's this feeling of home that inspired our new EM90, a car with room for life."

A confident exterior with an illuminating grille

With the EM90, Volvo aims to bring a new standard of style to the MPV segment. Inside, the EM90 is designed to be your living room on the move. It provides you with ultimate comfort for you to make the most of the time you spend in the car, thanks to Scandinavian design details that offer a truly premium experience.

However, the first acquaintance with the EM90 comes through the exterior design. At the front, the instantly recognisable and iconic Thor's Hammer headlights provide a grand appearance - the proud and confident face of a Volvo car.

New Volvo EM90 is electric luxury MPV with 458-mile range

Volvo's first MPV is said to channel the spirit of the Duett estate; brings 268bhp and private cinema

The new Volvo EM90 is a luxurious electric MPV that aims to provide a "comfortable living room experience" and touts more than 450 miles of range.

The third new Volvo to be revealed in the last 12 months, following the EX90 SUV and EX30 crossover, the EM90 is a technically advanced and highly specified rival to the likes of the Lexus LM and Mercedes V-Class.

Designed primarily for the Chinese market (where it is now available to pre-order), the EM90 is based on sibling brand Zeekr's 009 MPV, but has its own interior and exterior design that brings it into line with Volvo's line-up.

Volvo notes that while the MPV segment is "a new one for us", the EM90 embodies the 'concept of versatility' that has been a hallmark of its range since it was founded 70 years ago - highlighting the 1953 Duett estate as a spiritual forebear.

New Volvo EM90 luxury MPV revealed as V-Class rival

Meet the new Volvo EM90, a fully electric luxury MPV boasting 200 kW and a claimed range of 738 km. Should the likes of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class be worried?

Back in August 2023, we shared a teaser video confirming the new Volvo EM90. Now the Swedish brand has whipped the wraps off its fresh-faced fully electric luxury MPV, which looks set to take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class – or, more specifically, the fully electric EQV derivative.

Arriving as the automaker’s first multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in 96 years of operation, the EM90 is reportedly based on the Zeekr 009, a model offered in China by another of Volvo parent company Geely’s brands. The EM90, of course, made its debut in China, where pre-orders have already opened.

Powered by a 200 kW electric motor sited on the rear axle (a peak torque figure has not yet been released), the new EM90 has a claimed 0-100 kph time of 8.3 seconds. According to the Gothenburg-based firm, the 116 kWh battery pack affords the premium MPV a range of up to 738 km, according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). Meanwhile, charging time from 10 to 80% is “expected to be under 30 minutes”.

Furthermore, Volvo says the new MPV is “equipped with all the hardware necessary” to enable bi-directional charging, effectively meaning the EM90’s battery pack will be able to charge other electric vehicles and appliances.

Ultra luxurious Volvo EM90 revealed as Swedish brand’s first MPV

Volvo has always been associated with all the safe, practical and sensible stuff in life, but surprisingly the Swedish brand has never built a minivan. Well, soccer Moms and Dads, here you go..

Defined as a “premium MPV” the Volvo EM90 was conceived with some help from a friend, and thus the new van is closely based on parent company Geely’s Zeekr 09.

The Volvo shares its basic shell with its Chinese sibling, but the front and rear designs are unique, with the face resembling the EX90 SUV and sporting an illuminated grille and some theatrical lighting sequences.

The EM90 is fully electric - in line with the brand’s 2030 EV strategy - and powers the rear wheels through a single electric motor that produces 200kW. It’s fast for a van too, with Volvo claiming a 0-100km/h sprint time of 8.3 seconds.

Volvo EM90 unveiled - a luxurious long-range electric MPV

Volvo now officially expanded its electric vehicle portfolio with the introduction of the EM90, its first electric minivan. Diverging from its recent focus on SUVs, Volvo's EM90 ventures into a segment, where electric-propelled options have been severely limited.

Borrowing heavily on design elements from its sibling, the Zeekr 009, the EM90 presents a less audacious yet equally impressive appearance. The front fascia features a subtler illuminated grille and new headlights reminiscent of those on the EX90 electric SUV. The minivan's profile can’t hide its Zeekr origins, while the rear has been updated with new taillights extending onto the pillars, aligning with Volvo's design language.

The EM90 is a large vehicle by any standards, measuring 5,206 mm in length, 2,024 mm in width, and 1,859 mm in height, with a substantial wheelbase of 3,205 mm. This sizable footprint is complemented by either 19-inch or 20-inch aero-optimized wheels, enhancing both aesthetics and efficiency.

Inside, the EM90 offers a six-seat layout across three rows. The highlight is the middle row, where passengers can enjoy ventilated seats that slide fore and aft, resembling a pair of comfy lounge chairs. A 15.6-inch screen, descending from the headliner, provides entertainment and connectivity, albeit smaller than some competitors' offerings. The EM90's interior versatility is further highlighted by Volvo's claim that the rear seats can transform into a "theater, meeting room, or a bedroom" with simple controls or voice commands.

The EM90 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 268 hp (200 kW). This setup allows for a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 8.3 seconds. The relation to the Zeekr 009 suggests potential future variants with more potent dual-motor all-wheel drive setups.
