Volvo Ocean Race

2nd leg ended during our night as the yatchs arrived in Sanya. Final order was:
1 - Dongfeng
2 - Abu Dhabi
3 - Alvimedica
4 - Mapfre
5 - Brunel

SCA are still on their way in and should be on land in a few hours or so.

Dongfeng come 1st into their "home" port and have done really well since taking the lead on day 2 of the leg out of Abu Dhabi. So thats a 20 day track at the head of the pack...they did briefly lose their lead for a few hours just off the coast of India but their strategy paid off.
Interestingly, the gap at the end between 1 and 5 was 6 hours, with the gap between 4 and 5 being 2mins.

hey man sorry for only commenting now. had a bit of work to do.

Hope you had a great January.

Things not looking to good for SCA atm from what I could gather from your updates.

Hope they would've bounced back by now.

Yeah its a shame really but we can only hope they (SCA) get better and better. Its now a game of very small margins with these one design boats and often its the little things that go a long way to separating the fleet. If you looked at the tracker, number 2-5 basically sailed almost within visual range for over 50% of the leg.

In other news Vestas Wind finally made it to bergamo in italy where they shall begin the process of fixing it. Not sure how that will work but should be an interesting exercise in itself.

......aaaand its back to offshore racing. Yesterday's In-port race being won by hometeam - Dongfeng, Abu Dhabi in 2nd and Alvimedica in 3rd. Brunel, SCA and MAPFRE rounding off the log. Interestingly the in-port race was called the *Team Vestas Wind* in -port race...not sure if they were sponsoring it or what. Their boat in Italy getting re-built

Teams started again this morning (SA time) on an interesting let to Auckland. Big wind, big waves and big decisions expected on this journey to the south - very different from the prior leg which was shifty and slow. Log after approx 12hrs of racing VOR07Feb.jpg

Tough leg already, Dongfeng tearing part of their J1 only 24hrs into a 22+ day leg. Still in the lead though and the drag race to the Philippines continues.

After 3 days of drag race sailing from China to the Philippines, Team Brunel and SCA took the big gamble and gybed North about 18 hours ago. The rest of the fleet continued on the east-south-east routing they had. Bear in mind that their actual destination is more south south east of present location. Over the next few hours Brunel and SCA would lose 100+NM on the leaders (due to change in direction). In the last 3 hours or so, the leaders have had an avg speed of only 8kt while the breakaway group have been motoring along at 20+kt.

I think its safe to say SCA is not going to make it for this event.

I should start looking at the other teams.

Any suggestions?

Well interestingly in the last sched Brunel and SCA regained most of the lost NM on the leaders; they have more wind and a better angle and the latest predictions shows them arriving more than 12 hours ahead of the current leaders...time willl tell

If looking for a new team to support - Dongfeng is pretty strong considering that they have a lot of amateurs and in this leg they swapped out half the crew...

Had typed up a while spiel about the race then closed the app and lost the text.

Essentially Brunel are leading after taking the gamble north. SCA haven't been able to make that move count for them and are last.

ITCZ coming up so less wind and compression. 2 more weeks to Auckland
