I suppose it would be great sportsmanship if they had to get back into it.

But then again - it can always backfire.
 
Less than 750NM to go to the finish line, Brunel still leading, Dongfeng close in 2nd and Abu Dhabi losing out the podium...so far.

Stragglers are losing out big time to the leaders, SCA is over 400NM behind...

If there is they haven't indicated in their dailies. Anyhow the race is still young, lots of time to catch-up, if not this leg then in the next and the multiple ones after that.

dude I had too much to drink yesterday, so I might not comment a lot on this thread today, since it's about boats and water. :sick:
 
Latest schedule shows the fleet compressing as the leaders sail into light winds just off Oman. Will it be enough for Mapfre, Alvi and SCA to catch up?

It will certainly make for an interesting finish if conditions off the coast remain as they are. Who would forget the pass SCA did on Mapfre just 3NM from the finish here in CPT...

Less than 200NM for the leaders to reach Abu Dhabi...its neck and neck between Brunel and Dongfeng. Abu Dhabi OceanRacing are not far off as well - just 20NM behind. Drag race to the finish

Congrats to Team Brunel for winning the 2nd leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Dongfeng finished second just 14mins behind and Abu Dhabi closed off the podium.

Shot man.. Will keep at it as long as I can

All teams are back inshore and will be recovering from the last 4weeks at sea. Sponsor activities will be in full swing as well as some much needed family and gym time

Standings as of Leg 2

Leg 3 starts on Jan 1 with the in shore race and then the race to Sanya in China on Jan 3

Hey.....

So the 2nd leg began yesterday bit before getting into that, the 3rd in shore race took place on Friday.

Conditions were light and the start had to be delayed by over an hour until the wind built up. Finally race got started with Abu Dhabi, Brunel and Dongfeng leading the pack. SCA pulled an early maneuver catching a good wind shift and started pulling away from the pack. Was actually exciting racing in the light winds.

In-port Race Abu Dhabi Official Results: 1.Team SCA 2.Team Brunel 3.Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing 4.Dongfeng Race Team 5.Team Alvimedica 6.Mapfre

Onto the start of Leg 3...it was overcast and misty / foggy as the boats headed out to do their circuit. Race started in light winds again but Abu Dhabi took the lead, rounding the final marker ahead of Donfgeng and Brunel. SCA, Mapfre and Alvimedica made up the rest. Light winds dominated the first day and a bit of racing. Some early drama ensued with Dongfeng hitting some fishing nets but they didn't lose any time / speed.
 
Day 4 of racing and the yatch are southward of India. Big decision to make in terms of going NNW or SSW in passing Sri Lanka. Fleet spread is 14NM

*Update on Vesta Wind
The boat was loaded in Malaysia onto a ship heading for Genoa with an eta of Jan 25. Preliminary work has begun in Italy around how to repair the boat with a view to returning the yatch to the race in Lisbon
 
Last post should have read NNE and SSE...apologies...

The big gybe has happened and the fleet splits. SCA and Mapfre take the NNE route while Abu Dhabi, Brunel, Alvimedica and Dongfeng are, for now, choosing the SSE routing.
 
Been a while since my last update, the boats are now in the Strait of Malacca between Sumatra and Malaysia. Not much in terms of positional changes, Dongfeng is still in the lead with the rest lining up as follows; Mapfre, Alvimedica, Abu Dhabi, Brunel and SCA.

Going to be an interesting few days as there is a lot of activity in this area, loads of Commercial traffic as well as unmarked local fishermen etc. Boats have already reported hitting a number of objects (tree trunks, garbage etc). This part of the race is expected to force a restart in the fleet due to multiple wind shadows, traffic and the strong current. ON brunel, a food shortage might become an issue as the leg has taken a bit longer than expected...they had left abu Dhabi with the least additional weight on board.

Tricky conditions in the Strait of Malacca, debris causing teams to stop and dive to remove it from the keel, other boats having to drop anchor as there is no wind and the current is against them to stop drifting backwards. From a one-time lead of 160NM, Dongfeng are no only 16NM ahead of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. Alvimedica, Mapfre, Brunel and SCA complete the list
