Volvo XC60 Oil Level

I checked my XC60 R-DESIGN oil level after getting it back from its 20000km service, and noticed its only at about 75% full.
I phoned and asked the service manager, and he said this is how they do it for diesel engines and not to worry (plus more reasons.)
Having had a 3.0L Audi Q5 TDI before this car, I found this odd, because my Audi always came back with 100% full oil level.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Why would Volvo be different?
 
Different dealers?

I collected my preowned Audi from Aud Westrand after it went through through the famed 80 point check and full diagnosis. After 30km I got a 'Stop immediately and get oil!' error.
 
Perhaps phone swedespeed or revolve (they service mostly Volvo's) and ask them?

If that car takes say 7l of oil that means you are short 1.75l which sounds like a lot to me.
 
This is common practice. This is to cater for fuel oil dilution issue with diesels. This is another area where petrol tech is ahead.

It is primarily to reduce the possibility of an overfilled sump. Overfilled sumps, lead to aeration and loss of lubrication.


Note any engine, should continue to operate properly when the oil is on the low level mark.

Normally you fill till full level then start the car and let it idle for a min or two then you check and re add.

I think they forgot to add the second time.
 
The Volvo dealer is correct.

My wife drives an S40 D5 and after I foolishly topped up the oil up to the full mark, I got a nice error message on the display.

Had to take the car in to the local Volvo indie and they drained off some oil and reset the message. R600 later. Argh.

They say for the D5 engine the oil must always be ~70% full.
