Volvo's? Specifically 2.0TD S40

What year model and shape you looking at?

I got my mother a 99 S40 2.0 (Petrol). Had lot's of problems with it (Radiator, Blown Gasket), but the dealer sold us a dog. In general the Volvo S40 is a decent car, nice luxury features for the price.

BUT BEWARE VOVLO PARTS ARE EXPENSIVE.

I'd never drive a Volvo ;)

Volvo are awesome cars and are solidy built. I had a V70 2.4 and it was a beautiful car to drive. Only problem was when the maintance plan ran out, then the cost of maintaining such a vehicle became apparent. If nothing is wrong expect R 4000 - R 5000 a service at Volvo.
The next car I bought after the Volvo was Ford Focus TDCi. The S40 and Focus share the same chassis, engine, windscreen wipers, actually just about everything except the body shell. The 2.0 TDCi PSA sourced engine is dynamite, it doesn't have as many kilowatts as some competitiors but it has a great deal of torque, 320 NM with a 20 NM boost on overtaking. The only problem I ever had with the engine was the EGR sensor going at 90 000 km and this was covered under the extended maintance plan( EGR sensor +- R 4000 ). Also brake pads were dam expensive, R3000 for complete set of pads all around.
The engine was also nice and light on fuel with the best economy I got was going down to margate and I got an average of 4.7 lt / 100 km. In city driving of 6 - 7 lt/ 100km depending on how irritated you got with the traffic :)

The V40 2.0TD is a great car with a great engine, just take out an extended maintance plan to cover the servicing costs.

And one last thing, don't service your Volvo at Bedfordview..really crappy service on the car although they were friendly. Tom Camphor Volvo in Auckland Park gave the best servicing on the car.

I had a 99 S40. Nice car - just make sure it's fully imported - not one of the Botswana assembled ones. There are 2 coils and they generally pack up just over 100k kms. If you get from Volvo, expect to pay around R3k or R900 from Midas etc. Oh ya and the cam belt WILL break @ 180k kms - just like it says on the box!

Negatives are the same with Merc, BMW and Audi (ie when motorplan runs out, because expensive ...)

Yip that the reason why you can get them quite cheap once they've hit 80/90k kilometers...

Volvo are very underrated - supurbly built... the only negative is that they really lose value (even more than BM's)

It does lose alot, yup.

But the advantage is those of us getting used at great prices ;) That said, I chatted to the previous owner who lost 25% in 19 months, which doesn't seem more excessive than a BM?
