Voting will not make a difference, a woman from Swartberg in KwaZulu-Natal claimed on Wednesday

"My husband and I live on a farm and both our families have been victims of farm attacks," said Samantha Wright, who lives near the border of Lesotho, roughly 45km outside Kokstad.

"That's the reason we are not voting, together with the fact that I have a one-year-old baby and am unable to stand in long queues in very rural areas with a baby."

She said the voting stations in her district were in dangerous areas, and the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) had made it difficult for mothers to vote.

"They don't make it easy for mothers. You have to go into terrible locations and stand in long queues where starving dogs roam. It's not very pleasant. My husband and I are therefore not voting."

Wright said voting would not make a difference to them.

"It's a personal opinion. Being in a farming area, I see how things haven't improved here for farmworkers. They are being let down. Voting won't change that."

So her logic to beat crime is not to vote for anyone? (ie, complete inaction..) Ja nee. Some people.

No that's not her logic. Read the article again...she's clearly scared

No it is her logic. The "crime" excuse is just one poor justification. There are police at most voting stations.

She is very clear on her opinion. The claim that she feels she might be mugged is just an excuse. Almost no one feels threatened at voting stations.

Not only that, a mate of mine another voting area was with his small kids and they fast tracked him through the queue.

We do not know the conditions at that particular station. I understand her point though

Well I know the voting conditions of most stations I have visited. The police are well trained to deal with issues at voting stations. Not only that there will be multiple party agents from different parties there. From where Im sitting. She is making outlandish excuses for not giving a **** about voting.

I cant seem to find any information that shows any violence or irregularities at a voting station at Swartberg ever. So it appears to have not happened there in the past... and she didnt even pitch for this one, so I now she has some magical insight as to it currently happening?

Frankly, voting is perhaps the least important of our civic duties. Important, sure, but not nearly as important as actually getting involved in real civic institutions and structures, or participating in civil society.

We cannot discharge our responsibilities by making an X every half-decade, and think we've done our bit for society or democracy. Social life and social responsibility requires a lot more from good citizens.

Once the election is over, get involved!

If only there were other parties that one could vote for!
