This question targeted for the IT admins/Networking people

I have an onsite exchange server that send mail out using "smtp direct" ie doent use a smart host/smtp relay.Anyway i recently got a Vox FTTB uncapped solution with them. When i route all smtp traffic out this line i get various bounce messages such as access denied / on spamblock lists etc.Does anybody know if you are allowed to send out mail directly using smtp direct or must you use their SMTP smart host ?

Ive logged a call with VOX , but knowing them , it will take forever as they need to escalate it to 2nd level.

I'm pretty sure you should be allowed to send out directly on a fttb line.
But sounds like your IP might be on spamblock lists so you might have to contact the various spamblock agencies that have you blacklisted to have you removed.
You will also need to set up all the trusted DKIM/SPF dns entries to make life easier as well.

Fixed IP?
Likely in IP Range blocklists with the various RBL providers
Generally easiest is to use a more trusted Smarthost like the ISP one or Ideally a paid-for SMTP-relay service

Lots of Antispam providers offer a SMTP-out service as well as incoming ( Mimecast,Spamtitan etc have packages that offer the SMTP-out),so if you want to leverage a hosted antispam it's a good addition and sorts your relay problem out too

fixed ip

Well its on a spamblock but not because of my mail server. Its more like a whole IP range.I currenty have another metroconnect Fiber as well as a BDSL throught internet solutions. When i route out through those lines its fine.Just happens on Vox FTTB.

Make sure you have DKIM and SPF records for your public IP Address otherwise no matter how many times you remove it from the lists it will keep getting put back on.

Mxtoolbox is a good starting point

I agree with setting up SPF but i shouldnt need to , as it works fine with other service providers such as Internet Solutions.

Agreed but Vox's Ip ranges have on many occasions been used for malicious purposes. IS on the other hand have been in the game for a very long time and have a handle on it

Thanks , guess iam going to have to look at some type of smtp smart host.

Ok vox was surprising quick to sort the issue out , after i told 1st line to just escalate to 2nd line and not even bother trying to sort it out.Anyway the only thing they needed to do was create a PTR record to my hostname.

Glad you got it sorted
