VOX SIP Only

...or you could get SIP only accounts right now from Switch Telecom (www.switchtel.co.za), with a choice of 087 or geographic numbers and choice between individual line (supported with Snom, LinkSys, Siemens, ATcom and other phones & ATAs) or trunk offerings (supported with Asterisk, 3CX, Epygi and Quintum among others). Also, no minimum R300/month pre-paid airtime commitment (only the actual amount you spend, billed post-paid) and a choice between per-second or 60/30 billing packages.

The only reason i would prefer VOX is that there are so many people with VOX you would not get charged for on net calls.

If I read that correct your minimum bill per month would for R325 ie minimum talk time R300 plus the R25 to get a 087 number. And a once off R299 setup fee!

That is ridiculously over priced. This is actually a slap in the face, yes you've been asking for it for years now, so we've finally giving you what you wanted so now go away and stop asking, and if you do take it great for us lots more profit... But we don't really want you to take it, just stop asking. Get real VOX monthly SIP account should be cheaper than your ADSL Phone price....

Actually there seems to be a R49 per month line rental charge. That's a bit ridiculous if you ask me. What the hell are you renting? Drop the monthly charge and I might consider using Switch, but I refuse to pay a monthly fee. I only want to pay for what I use.

Deweyzeph: the 'rental' amount covers basic service provisioning, including having an intelligent human answer the phone and handle queries (support, billing, etc) as well as things like bandwidth for the phone registering every 10 minutes, sending keepalives every 30 seconds, provision of a phone number, voicemail, etc.

If you want a zero-rental service, you're going to get a zero-service service, much like Skype, where all is fair and well provided you never try and call for assistance and live with the fact that if something does actually go wrong, you're going to have to wait until they detect it because you cannot get hold of them.

There will always be different types of end-users looking for different services. The Switch Telecom service is aimed at the majority of users who do need to be able to call someone every now and then. Many customers don't even know how to configure a phone -- they order it for delivery pre-configured. And when it stops working, many don't know how to tell basic things if it is their ADSL line at fault, or VoIP provider.

You are clearly a power user and I respect that you may not need that level of service. But claiming it is "ridiculous" to charge a service fee when 95% of the end-users in the market are not power users like yourself is disingenuous.

FWIW, note that the Vox SIP only service also has a service fee as does TelFree, ECN and most other licensed SA telcos.

The only complaint, actually two, I have with these guys is the inconsistency on their website. Especially when it comes to configuring your device. I also requested the settings, and was sent a PDF manual however it did not work with the settings given.

I had a look at the diagnostic log of x-lite to see what the parameter values were. So I finally was able to setup my x2 Nokia N95s.

Here's where everything fell flat. You're not able to phone another wanatel user on their username. If you want to do that each wanatel user needs to signup for a DID number. (as explained by the wanatel support team).

Damn. Their call quality and connection was superior to VoipBuster, which is what I'm used to.

I'm still looking for a local provider where there is no monthly fees, and users can phone each other for free. Anyone know about such a service? I was even considering setting up my own VOIP server. I had everything setup before using 3CXPhoneSystem71. Had some issues with the N95s though...
