VPN Access

I have a problem accessing my company VPN (PPTP protocol) when using my Vodacom 3G data connection.

It works fine on the same PC when using a wireless connection via Neotel or Telkom ADSL.

I am not 100% sure but I think it might have worked previously so don't know if Vodacom has changed anything on their sire.

As far as I am aware I am using the standard Internet APN, any other suggestions?

I had a similar problem with a workers laptop last month, what would happen is that she could connect to 3G fine but when trying to connect to the VPN it would just not go through no matter what I tried.
I eventually came right by doing the following:
Removed the VPN connection that was created.
Downloaded a program called rarepair (what it does is it removes all netowork drivers/drives etc).
Restarted laptop as instructed by program.
Rarepair program re-installs all files/drivers etc that it removed when you run it for the first time.
Restarted laptop again.
Connected to 3G.
Re-created the VPN connection.

And after all that the laptop has been working fine ever since.
Hope this helps.

Having the same issue with 4 users on our network.
VPN will work one day but stop the next.
Works perfectly fine off of my ADSL connection at home.

3 of the 4 users live in Lenasia and work off of the same cell tower.
Getting the laptop in now to do some testing, will let you know what I find.

Ok I have managed to find out a bit more about this issue.
According to a source Vodacom are running out of IP addresses and have started NATing client connections.

From my testing I have found that if I get a IP address on 41.x.x.x the VPN connection works fine. If I get an IP of 10.x.x.x VPN authentication does not work.

Unfortunately I don't think there is much we can do until Vodacom sorts this out or moves to IPv6.
I was also informed that CellC are in the process of doing this as well.

best suggestion that I can give is disconnect and reconnect your 3g connection until you get a 41.x.x.x IP (based on my testing)

CARNaG3za , what VPN software are you using?
Have you logged a call with Vodacom to allow this software through their NAT ?

You could try provisioning the sim for unrestricted APN as well and see if it works.

I will get one of the notebooks in again and try that.

We're aware of the issue with NAT'd IP's not working on all VPN permutations and the guys are on top of it. This should currently only affect some subs in Gauteng.

The 'unrestricted' APN should sort you in the mean time.

If you cannot get the unrestricted APN for some reason, as a workaround, disconnect and reconnect after a few seconds till you get a 41.x.x.x IP. Then you'll be OK.

Thanks for the feedback.
I have requested that the 'unrestricted' APN be applied for from our management and will have to wait for them to make a decision before I can go any further with this.

I will let you know the out come.

Seems like management are not going to go for the 'unrestricted' APN. So I will not be able to confirm if that solution would work.
Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Does anyone know when this will be sorted out? I have literally 100's of users that are affected by the "little" problem.

I have users in Gauteng, Bloem and CPT that are affected.

The problem is with the world-wide shortage of IP's that are forcing networks into NAT until v6 can be fully deployed.

The only solution is to give non-NAT'd IP's on request thus the need to get you to switch. Send VD a list of the affected MSISDN's and let see if he can have them bulk provisioned on either the unrestricted or internetVPN APNs.

Thanks for the feedback, I have tested and the IP issues is exactly what is causing our problem. If I keep reconnecting until I get a 41.x.x.x address then no problems.

Problem is how do I explain this to my users?

Same here, dozens of users affected in the last 6 months.

will request unrestricted APN's from our Vodacom Rep

I have the same issue. The problem is only in Gauteng thou. In Cape town I have no issues with VPN.

This change by Vodacom has left our company with a major problem. We are in construction and use most of our 3G connections with a combination of Huawei B683's and Hauwei B970b 3G routers. They are hooked up to a Cisco firewall unit to create a tunnel thru to our office. Now all of a sudden with this change they will just not connect. We have figured out the 41.x.x.x and 10.x.x.x issue, however this is transparent to the user and they cannot even access the Huawei units as all their traffic is tunneled thru to Head Office via the VPN, no internet breakout for them on their network. Also one of our directors are very unhappy as his VPN is only working intermittently from his 3G USB Stick.

Surely Vodacom should have let their customers know about this changes.

Can someone from Vodacom please paste the easiest way to get this resolved. From what I understand fo the unrestricted APN is it will allow traffic into that IP as well, which could cause high bills. Vodacom actually has you sign documents for this. Aslo I have about 25 sims like this.

As long as your configure your routers' firewalls to block incoming traffic, you will be OK.
