So, if I want to continue to feed the family's netflix jones, one of my options, I guess, is a VPN. Not unotelly, but a VPS type one, that's just for me?

Good option, or bad?
Anyone have any suggestions for hosts?
I'm thinking creating a tunnel between my mikrotik and the host, and routing any traffic originating from the Roku through the VPN....

This should be entirely possible. Whether or not it'll work is another question, Netflix may be able to track this too.

I'd go for DigitalOcean. They're well priced ( $5 per month for 1TB of transfer on a small server ) and not just because I have a referral link.

You could always go there without my link too. Here

Ok quite a few things here you need to consider.

1. Netflix is not only targeting DNS proxy services. They are actively trying to restrict access to users on VPNs, Proxies, and I've even heard of user's getting their accounts tagged and apparently there's not much you can do about that.

2. If you're going to use a VPN, and you're fine with it possibly not working, it (obviously) needs to be in a location in which the Netflix library you want to use is in. I would suggest spinning up a DO (Digital Ocean) instance in the US and trying it out as it's cheap and really convenient if it does not work.

3. You could also try to scrap the VPN idea and create your own DNS server and proxy your DNS queries like Unotelly, there's a ton of info on how to do this online.

Any thoughts on this:

I know they're targeting vpn users - but identified how? I figured they were going after the specialised VPN providers - eg unoVPN etc...?

Update 07 March 2016

With Netflix’ latest Android app update, all VPN or SmartDNS service that we know of, stopped working on Android unless you can manually update your DNS settings. VPNs still work with the iOS app, but the next update will most likely include the same fix. Thus if you update the Netflix app, both VPNs and SmartDNS will stop working. The VPNs listed below should still work on desktop (OSX and Windows) and we are doing our best to keep the list as up-to-date as possible.

So if you look at those, they are dedicated VPN providers, for the purpose of netflix region jumping.
I'm looking at running my OWN vpn, using a VPS... I don't believe it will have the same issue?

I shut down my DNS proxy recently. (was running a public one for MyBB).

It's just not worth it anymore. Too much cat and mouse and they're actively blacklisting DC IP ranges so it may work for ages (mine lasted probably a good year) or more likely it will go belly up as soon as they release an app update as they're ACTIVELY blocking people.

Look at:

GitHub - ab77/netflix-proxy: Docker packaged smart DNS ...
GitHub - trick77/dockerflix: Docker-based SNI proxy for ...

Rumour has it that some of DO's IP's are still clean. Me personally i've tried 5 different VPS hosts and they're all blocked now.

They're actively blocking vps servers? Even if they aren't hosting proxies or similar?

VyprVPN Pro is $99.99 a year (effectively $8.33pm), and claims to have super sophisticated technology for circumventing IP blocking.

How Chameleon™ Defeats VPN Blocking

Golden Frog's engineers have developed a remarkable new, proprietary VPN technology called Chameleon that is available in the VyprVPN apps for Windows, Mac, Android and your router. Chameleon scrambles OpenVPN packet metadata to ensure it’s not recognizable via deep packet inspection (DPI), while still keeping it fast and lightweight. The Chameleon technology uses the unmodified OpenVPN 256-bit protocol for the underlying data encryption. The result is that VyprVPN users are able to bypass restrictive networks put in place by governments, corporations and ISPs to achieve an open internet experience without sacrificing the proven security for which OpenVPN has long been known. Experience a truly open and uncensored Internet with Chameleon VPN.
