VPN on a WAP for ROKU

Hi all


Looking for a bit of advice here.
Currently use Unotelly to spoof the DNS so I can use my Roku, this has been fine for the last 3 years or so, albeit sometimes I would get a weird error message when opening pages on the laptop.

Now I have changed to Fibre the IP address is changing an awful lot more than when I was on ADSL, sometimes every ten minutes or so.
This means I have to log onto the Unotelly page and update the IP, there are ways to do this automatically but not on a regular enough interval.

My way of thinking to combat this is to use a VPN service.
I only want to connect the Roku through the VPN all other connections to run 'normally' as the VPN service will have an impact on performance.
This will alleviate the constant IP changing?

I have looked into custom firmwares to flash my router that will allow me to be selective over which device uses the VPN, my router is not listed. I have checked on the ww wrt, openvpn and others to check.
I don't really want to purchase another router as only had this a few months when I got the fibre installed.

My question is, will a wireless access point set up with a VPN with the Roku connected to it do what I'm trying to achieve,

Is it normal for an IP address to change so often on fibre?
 
I have no idea.
I guess if you are not using a device like a Roku or something you would not notice the issue.
 
Is it disconnecting while you're streaming? If it's only during periods of inactivity you could probably get away with generating traffic, perhaps with a constant ping?
 
The issue arises when I am watching iplayer and other UK based channels, and yes the stream will cease.
I have to logon onto Unotelly and update the IP, then restart iplayer etc.

This is why I'm considering a VPN service now to alleviate this problem
 
Fibre is with Mweb.

Have tried already tried the Unotelly link method before, it just does not offer a fast enough refresh rate.

Although it states it checks every few minutes, I dont think it does

Which dynamic dns service are you using? Maybe one can force more frequent updates.
