Hi

I'm having problems using VPN on MyWireless. I can connect to internet and the ping times are ok but when I VPN using PPTP I experience huge packet loss. Is this because of port shaping? Has anyone used VPN successfully on MyWireless

Regards

While I can't say that I've used VPN at all, FWIW I can offer this:
- someone whose opinion I can trust said that he's done VPN over MyWi, but ping times are problematic enough that he's going across to The Wired Enemy (seeing as he uses it for work, makes sense..)
- while a step removed from actual VPN I am successfully using Hamachi on MyWi-MyWi and MyWi-ADSL links and, while not fast (am using the free/slower version) do at least work. Of course YMMV, but there may well be hope for you yet!

I've set up a VPN using PPTP running on our Linux firewall. The firewall has a 512kpbs MyWireless connection. I connect from home using a 128kbps MyWireless connection. The ping time are OK (200-400ms) and I don't experience much packet loss. Just don't try things like Windows Terminal Service (Remote Desktop) as the latency is just too high.

I use Cisco VPN in a virtual machine on my PC, and connect to terminal servers just fine (though it can get helluva slow when running remote control in a terminal server session inside another terminal server session.

I have 256K Sentech, and do this stuff with other PCs using the net.

i found it crap.

JHB (1024 dsl) to a KZN (512sentech) had pings which NEVER went lower then 600. Remote deskop (primary use) was barely usable.

Now with iBurst, not the best alternative but alot more faster then Sentech. Pings from dsl to iburst is about 180 to 250ms.

Hoping for adsl end of july (waiting about 1 1/2 years now :(
