I'm trying to network a cape town office with a joburg office and I purchased 2 D-Link DI-804HV VPN routers to do this...

I decided to setup the VPN between my office (based in CT) and the client's office obiviously also in CT.

After following all the FAQs online and special instructions from D-Link support Johannesburg. I configured everything exactly how it should be, and could just not get it working, after a lot of hours on the phone with the D-Link support guys, eventually they suggested I give them remote access to both routers, I left them for a few days and they tried numerious different attempts to get the VPN up and running but to no avail, in the router status window the managed to get it to say "Establishing" and that was about it. Couldn't ping any PC's on the remote network nothing...

The support guy at D-Link, finally decided that the telkom exchange around here does not support it or that both my offices and the client offices are situated too far from the exchange, and that they would organise a credit for routers at my suppliers...

Now were they just looking for the easy way out, or is this really the case? I find it hard to believe...My client is very eager to get there WAN up and running, and I can't believe that a 64K diginet from telkom for R4000 a month is the only option here...

Could it be the D-Link guys who lack knowledge in VPN setups, could it be the D-Link routers itself?

I'm looking for another solution, because like I said the client is really eager to get everything up and running, but not so eager on paying R4000 a month for a basic 64k connection, which I can totally understand..

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

How do the Dlink routers handle the dynamic IP of ADSL?

I know that you can run IPSEC tunnels over ADSL because our company has a VPN router which can run over dynamic ADSL but we currently only target special applications.

You can maybe try using a different packaged router which can support dynamic DNS.

VPN Not working

Dear Neville If this was that D-Link tech support guys don't have the know how why is that the VPN Router you are talking about is used on many big company server and and vpn solutions ? Face it you did not do you homework and know you are blaming it on D-Link. IT support DDNS

megrain, im not sure that you can accuse neville of 'not doing his homework'. I am also an engineer interested in using VPN to link two of my LANs together on seperate sites. Before this post I had never considered the possibility of Telkom's 'exchange' not supporting VPN? As far as I'm concerned VPN is just packet-switched data and should be transferrable/able to be tunneled over any TCP/IP link.

If you claim that big companies use D-Link routers for VPN then why weren't the D-Link technical support able to solve the problem?

I will also not claim to be all-knowing on this subject but perhaps someone that knows more about Telkom exchanges (and VPN) can comment? Surely the exchange, if it supports ADSL, supports all the functions of the ADSL router?

Neville you may want to investigate using Planet/Netgear devices. I had been considering those (and D-Link) for my VPN setup but this has helped me narrow-down the list.

PS. I know a guy that has got VPN to work but had to use servers between the VPN routers and LANs, will see if I can get more info from him.

VPN Problem With D-Link

Dear jacobstone Ask Neville how I am. And for the Telkom Exchange problem is that DSL Lines can only go up to 15 km in theory and tested stable up too 8km and telkom are using adsl for greater distances than that and because of this there can be problems with vpn's over adsl. It is not that the exchanges don't support VPN, you right it is only Packet switches over TCP/IP.
For the server setup go and look @ some Linux solutions. Here is a great Linux forum www.linuxquestions.org

A VPN requires amount of bandwidth to make a connection because of encryption if you’re DSL can't provide it then it will not work.

I'm not going to get personal with Neville. The only thing is like you said you don't know a great deal of VPN so does Neville too, but to say that D-Links techies don't know what they are doing is not fair. You don't run around telling an ISP how to do his mail server or Service Provide (of any service) how to do this job.
