Hwsti Guys

So a while back my VPN stopped supporting L2TP and therefore I could no longer run the VPN through my router. I've been looking for a while now but have been unable to find decent routers that support either, OpenVPN, FlashRouters or IKeV2(Haven't even heard of a router that supports IKeV2). So just wanted to ask for any suggestions in regards to which router to get and if Vodacom will support it as they are currently my ISP.

Thanks

DNS is much easier to use, no VPN connection needed. Any reason you would rather use a VPN connection?

I presume this is to open US Netflix etc?

Yeah US Netflix. I'm not too clued up on Networking so a VPN just seemed easier to use. I bought a one-year subscription just to see how it goes and never looked at DNS after that. If DNS will work with my current router then I am definitely opened to that but would like to use a router currently so I can at least get use of my subscription.

Really wish I did more research beforehand. My Router is currently a Huwawei HG (The one Vodacom gives you).

Same issue, my ASUS router does not support OPEN VPN. So doing some shopping, The routers that do support it is expensive

The ASUS RT-AC68U has OpenVPN. The lowest price I have seen it for is R2739 currently at Takealot. It's not cheap, but it is a fantastic router.

I use DNS for name resolution, and a VPN to connect to my office.

Cheaper option would just be to run the VPN on the device you're using, otherwise you'll be throwing a few grand at a router for no good reason.

Im sure its for devices like smart tv's or tablets where installing software is a pain or not possible.

So yeah I’ve seen routers for a few grand nothing less than R2000 for the functionality needed. Guess I’ll just have to save up. For things like the phones, tablets and laptops I can install the VPN that’s no issue but yeah for things like the Apple TV and Smart TVs in the household unfortunately that’s not an option. Thanks for the input everyone. Appreciate it.
