Wht is the purpose of these VPN tunnels that are offered on the internet?

Various uses. The most common is to connect two offices securely i.e. The LANs are joined together securely.

Other uses include gaming (Think Hamachi). Another use that has recently become popular is to run torrents through it so that if the RIAA or whoever traces it it terminates at the VPN providers office.

Sometimes also used to bypass shaping.

Does the VPN tunnel increase the number of bytes sent and received?

My traffic monitor is showing almost double the traffic of what it used to, why is this?

Makes a difference depending on.

Which VPN are you using?
For what reason? gaming with a friend browsing web, streaming?

Using it for basic browsing, some sites block IP's outside of the US

Had a quick look, its MS PPTP. A PPTP VPN itself, has little IP overhead, nothing like you are noticing.

I would be cautious about using a free service (or even paid) like that. It would be trivial for them to do DNS poisoning etc. its likely your firewall's protection is bypassed by the way too. Infecting you system with badware (tm) would be a walk in the park.
