VPN usage

I know this question is somewhat on a par with "how long is a piece of string", but how much data does it use to VPN or remote desktop to another machine, and work on that machine for a couple of hours?

I'm just wondering, if I ever had to work from home for an afternoon, remote desktopping into my work machine, how much would it end up costing me in terms of data.

It all depends on the quality of experience you need/want. Using Remote Desktop with all the bells and whistles disabled isnt too bad (just leave bitmap caching enabled). A rough estimate, I would say 30+ mb an hour. Using remote desktop over a VPN could end up saving alot of bandwidth depending on the compression. Might even cut the usage by 1/4 or even more.

All throughput to and from your machine are dependent on the fastest connection from your point.

So it is actually rather easy to budget for the worst case scenario by just multiplying your maximum download speed with the amount of time you are online.

You must be made aware that depending on what kind connection you are using that you may be using both your upload and download capacity at the same time ie. repeater, rendezvous server etc for firewall holepunching, NAT2NAT traversal and encryption etc.

I do not know what your scenario is but RDP (remote desktop) uses the least amount of bandwidth and is nice and fast but it is very insecure unless you access it from some kind of encrypted platform so there are technical aspects to consider.

Your VNC flavours all use technology similar to screen grabbing "Print Screen" and only transfer bits of the screen that changes to your side. VNC is more bandwidth intensive but can be made extremely secure and has a lot of neat features.

So in other words your string is only as long as your as your bandwidth allows you to go.

Our tests show that remoting takes up about 5 megabytes every 10 minutes, but you can squeeze more out of it if you only share the actual application screen you want to use and bump up the compression or lower the colours used.

30megs is a good ballpark
