In one of my premises we have SADV installing a network and at the same time at another premises we have Vumatel.
Differences in build and construction:
SADV's contractors are not as organised as those of Vuma. I expect this is to do with experience, as Vuma has built quite a few more networks. Their rehabilitation and turnaround times are much slower. We had several meetings with the contractors for rehabilitation problems and they also tend to leave trenches open longer (Some up to 6 weeks). They also have a lot more way leaf problems on quite a few sites. The contractors have different teams and communication between the teams that mill the roads and those doing the civils are not up to standard.
On the other hand, SADV have much better consultation and if you have a problem, getting it addressed by the contractor is much easier. Vuma have no proper site manager on site and getting problems addressed in a normal neighbourhood is impossible. You cannot get through to the right people to speak to at their call centre to get rehabilitation problems fixed.
Vuma's civils was incredible. They trenched more than 1km per day, installing ducting, manholes and closed up the next day. Within 3 days of trenching, their rehabilitation was mostly done. At my premises, they cut just over 100m of concrete, trenched it, had the ducting in, compacted and recast the concrete in 4 days.
Time differences:
Vuma is much more organised. here is the timelines of the two different build. Vuma's build is roughly about 10 times in size to that of SADV :
Planning and obtaining way leafs: Vuma - Unknown, SADV 8 May 2018
Breaking ground: Vuma 13 October 2018, SADV 22 August 2018
Civils completed: Vuma and SADV 9 November
Floating completed: In progress - SADV completed floating 29 November. Vuma has completed floating 30 November
Splicing - SADV completed 14 December and Vuma completed in December as well.
Testing and provisioning. - SADV expected end December, Vuma early January.
Going live date: - Expected January for both
Connected date:
Order time differences
My order with Vuma has been in since the beginning of November. Cool ideas contacted me 2 days later with a reference number. Vuma informed me that I will be contacted with an installation date during this week. Once the network goes live beginning of January, I will be connected within 24 hours, as the ONT will already be installed by then. This is not quite as I understood the way it worked with some of my friend's builds. They use to install ONT's shortly after the network has gone live. Maybe this has changed, maybe not. Tine will tell.
I can only place my order with SADV once the network gets transferred. SADV opened for orders 28 November. Installation is expected to only happen in January, as the testing will be completed too late in December. They have an open day with the ISP's 3 December for orders in the area.
Deadlines:
The dates by Vuma is somewhat obscure. The only dates we will be able to see is their installation dates and live dates. SADV's network was going to be live by end July, then it moved out to 14 August. When they broke ground, handover date by the contractor was set for 11 September, then it moved out to end September, then 12 November. Last week when they finally finished the civils, they had the date pegged at 23 November. I suspect this date is going to be moved at least once more before handover.
