Vumatel & Afrihost Fibre (No Internet)

Hiya

So I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this (new here) and it's a bit of a rant and seeking actual help.

The fibre is through Vuma and my ISP is Afrihost, they sent me the "free" d-link router. I've read through some of the posts here and understand everyone seems to have some issues with Afrihost but I've been with them for years on ADSL and never really had issues until now.

Vumatel installed the fibre into my home on Friday and the guy said that everything looks good then he left.
I contacted Afrihost to activate my line and they said all I need to do is plug an Ethernet cable from the Vuma box (ONT/CTE everyone calls it something else for some reason?) and browse to either shop.vumatel, activate.afrihost or google then it should redirect automatically.

So since the installation date I have not been able to access the internet at all, the following is what's happening
Vuma Box
1. The Power Light is on and stable (blue)
2. the FX light is on and stable (orange)
3. the LAN1 light is on and stable (orange)

Router
1. Internet light is on (blue)
2. I've disabled the wifi in the meantime as I've had to reset the router hundreds of times now but I've tried with and without wifi enabled, it's connected via ethernet to my pc anyway.
3. Lan1 is on (blue)

PC
1. the network adapter has the warning (orange triangle), troubleshooting the adapter says the DNS is unresponsive. Afrihost support seems to ignore this fact even though I keep telling them it's not gonna work.
2. I've tried google chrome and internet explorer (ugh) to browse to all the sites they tell me to, the browser loads a little bit then I get a "No Internet" message.
3. the network adapter is set to obtain the IP address and DNS automatically.

I've tried the same thing on my work laptop and personal laptop but get the same thing via ethernet and wifi.

the next thing they tell me is that they will end the lease of the mac address so I need to turn off the vuma box and unplug the lan cable, wait 15 mins, turn it back on, plug the lan cable from the vuma box directly to my pc (bypassing the router). usually at this point of the call the afrihost guy will go home and never get back to me.
exactly the same as above happens.

Since Friday, I have spoken to 6 people from Afrihost. Every time they take me through the exact same steps and tell me that the Vuma box is faulty, so they phone Vuma and tell me that there's nothing wrong and "it should work".

that's the answer I get folks, "it should work". whoopee.

I ended up phoning Vumatel directly, going to sales since they don't seem to have a support line, and a guy ended up helping me from that side. he took me, once again, through the exact same steps and then said Afrihost is wrong since everything is fine on his side.

let the finger pointing and shifting of blame commence.

where do I go from here? could it possibly be a configuration thing on my side? any help is appreciated.

PS. switching ISP is not as simple as they've already taken my money and I'm not even sure I'm gonna get it back at this point.

PPS. if afrihost reads this, stop telling me to reset my damned router already

If you're getting Fibre installed then please, at all costs, avoid Afrihost.

Had the exact same problem with them (assisting someone else with their installation/activation) and it took almost a week to get connected after Vumatel did the installation.

If you can, switch over to Cool Ideas. Otherwise good luck with Afrihost.

I hear good things about Cool Ideas, I guess I'll look into it then.

Nah dude, its just the initial setup that is the pain.

Vuma installed our fibre on a friday through AH and it was only working on the sunday at ~15:00.

You will not regret is. It was a mistake to go with Afrihost, or any ISP that offers ADSL as well to begin with.

In the long run you will be a lot happier. Don't waste your time with Afrihost.

Did the Vumatel installation team supply you with the VT number of your fibre? Maybe phone Vumatel and check to see if the fibre circuit has been activated yet from their side?

yuppers, I've given the object number to Vuma and Afrihost and they both confirmed it's up and running and live.

I am not an expert but from what i understand is that if the CPE was connected directly to the PC the line would be locked to the MAC address of your network card. It would not see the router at all. How did you order the service from Afrihost? Via the vumatel shop? If this is the case you will either have to spoof the network cards MAC address on the router or ask Afrihost to release the MAC (not sure the correct terminology) But yes...Afrihost is a mistake if at all possible go cisp...

I ordered through afrihost, they got vuma to do the install from there
I didn't go into too much detail because of the wall of text, but while being on the line with afrihost we did release the mac
tried the router
release mac
tried the pc
release mac
tried the laptop
etc.. multiple times

Ok, your CPE and router is the issue.
Your WiFi router must be connected from the LAN/WAN port to the CPE, port 1.
Now enable your WiFi router to get DHCP addresses directly from the CPE device.
You cannot use internal DHCP from your WiFi device, unless you enable NAT.

that's exactly what we did. by default the wifi device (router) gets the DHCP address from the CPE device

Not sure if this will be of any help...but yes you have to set the router to connect via DHCP... it wont be default.
ftp://ftp.d-link.co.za/DSL/DSL-G256...matel-DSL-G2562DG-Fibre-setup-via-DHCP-02.pdf

Thanks for that, I'll definitely follow those steps tonight to see if it works.
my UI is different but if I remember correctly if you specify that it should not get it automatically you're forced to enter the address manually that's why I'm thinking it defaults but I might be remembering it wrong

Still a concern that you dont get a connection when connecting directly to the CPE bypassing the router. Im sure you have tried the obvious... tested with a different LAN cable? :)

haha yeah, I've tried three cables after confirming they definitely work. the one came with the router, the other two I use for ADSL
