Vumatel say they will soon be going live in Glenvista.
We mainly use Netflix for streaming off a 20m ADSL line and that works fine no buffering.
Now with Vumatel which ISP works well for streaming we also watch a bit of youtube. Our current usage is about 300 gigs a month.
Bonus question when is the best time to ask Vumatel to connect you we have the grey box on the boundary wall.

We can help you with the whole Vuma connection and get you up and running on our network. We peer directly with Netflix so you'll have super fast speed through our network for streaming. DM us your details and well get in touch.

Thanks guys, I looked at the Netflix speed test page and nothing above 4 Mbps so is 20 M line needed?

I think that is the global average for all the cool ideas users using netflix and not necessarily what is required to use netflix. Depends on what quality you want to stream and how fast you want streams to load. Slower speeds mean longer loading times and lower quality and faster speeds means faster loading speeds and better quality.....

I would say 20Mbps is a nice speed to have. You don't want to max the line then when someone is on the wifi you start buffering or if you have VOIP setup too then calls are degraded because the line is being maxed.

Is there a cost involved if you increase or decrease your speeds with different ISPs?
Did a long walk through the suburb and all the houses have the grey box from Vuma so hopefully they switch on soon.

Upgrades and downgrades are free, with us anyway. But it's recommended that you do it at month end.

Heavily compressed. You will not have good quality like this.

I have a 4Mbps Vumatel line with Cool Ideas and I use it a lot for Netflix Standard ($9.99/month) without issues.

That said, I typically don't have anything else using bandwidth when I'm watching Netflix so a 20Mbps line would be best if you want to run 2 or more streams at a time or any downloads and at least 1 stream.

If the Cool Ideas package prices come down a bit I will probably upgrade to at least 20Mbps and start using my line for other things in addition to Netflix.

Netfix recommends 5mb, but still works fine on 4mb, just like youtube 1080p works 100% on a 4mb line

No difference between quality, be it 1080p on 4mb line or 1080p on 100mb line, same res and same bit rate.

But browsing goes to a standstil on other devices if you only have 4Mb line and streaming 1080p

Completely untrue. Why would Netflix use up to 8 or 10mbps if 4mbps is enough?

Buffering
edit: think you are right, some movies etc are encoded with higher bit rates, all depending if your device handles the encoding better

What does this mean for my Netflix shows?

Per-title encoding allows us to deliver higher quality video two ways: Under low-bandwidth conditions, per-title encoding will often give you better video quality as titles with “simple” content, such as BoJack Horseman, will now be streamed at a higher resolution for the same bitrate. When the available bandwidth is adequate for high bitrate encodes, per-title encoding will often give you even better video quality for complex titles, such as Marvel’s Daredevil, because we will encode at a higher maximum bitrate than our current recipe. Our continuous innovation on this front recognizes the importance of providing an optimal viewing experience for our members while simultaneously using less bandwidth and being better stewards of the Internet.

Our office 100mb line does suck so maybe thats why its the same bit rate as 4mb fibre

The 20/2 RocketNet option is also a good option price wise for R695

On Vumatel, can you confirm its R500 startup fee (thus R499 discount) over and above the normal R1710 payable to Vumatel. And free router? And this on a month to month option? Should I change ISP after a few months, do I have to repay router cost and startup fee discount? Thanks.

We only charge the setup of R500 on our 4/1 and 20/2 packages. Router cost of R500 divided by 6 months is payable to us, less the amount of months you’ve been with us. So if you were with us for 5 months then you would pay a R83 penalty. (This is an example and could vary based on service taken and router provided)
