Before Blatter tried to open the game he said "no vuvuzelas please" or something, but ya just shows that nobody watches local football matches

SABC seem to be aware of it being annoying though did not seem as bad as on supersport3

re local football matches: no, prefer English and Italian football. I saw that bit about the request for silence, but I thought it was the announcer who introduced Blatter?

the announcer had an American accent this was definitely blatter, I'll check my PVR to confirm.

But he was obviously calling it so he could speak.

OK. Either way it took a while to quieten them down, but excitement is hard to contain.

those trumpets are the most annoying thing , and puts me off watching the game. Some people say it brings passion and excitement to the game , i say thats bull****.U want excitement watch how italian , spanish , south american fans sing , and way their flags. It looks so cool.

Was at the game myself. I go to many local football games and I must say this must have been the most cosmopolitan crowd I've ever seen at a football game in SA. I grew up with the vuvuzela being blown at games, so I really have no issue with it but strangely enough I found myself getting annoyed with it today.

There are actual rhythms to how it's blown and specific sounds according to which team you're blowing for...unfortunately with time this has all been thrown out the window by mass marketing of the thing and new fans thinking it's 'cool' to blow away for 90mins like they're going mental.

The stadium announcer tried to explain to the crowd that they should only blow their vuvuzelas when asked to...that worked for like the first 10 mins before the opening of the game. After that it was a free-for-all. :p Although I don't mind them I think they should be banned or at least a smaller, less powerful version sold as official merchandise at the FWC...or at least some campaign to teach fans songs and ways of how to blow them and when

There is a time and way? The only time I have seen them used in a rythm is by celtics fans, but thats all the time. So when should we sound it and how?

I get the feeling the vuvuzela will be going global, it's gonna catch on I'm sure of it :D.

Yep. Back in the day when football was the only sport township dwellers had you could be killed just for supporting the wrong team in the wrong place. Remember the days of games between Chiefs and Pirates ending in seats being burnt etc?

My dad actually taught me a few of the "songs" and rhythms, they're actually pretty hard to do. There are very few folk who still know them though as the older generation don't go to football games anymore. There are even team songs and chants a la English and European football. If someone within the LOC had some intelligence they'd research this stuff and use it in marketing campaigns to teach fans.

With regards to the vuvuzela...

first I was like

...then I was :erm:

...then I thought :D

TI Africa people... if I were a tourist I'd be soaking up a different culture, I like the vuvuzela now the louder the better.. :D

Watching Torez in Rustenberg :D with vuvuzelas blowing away felt just right not clinical the way the fascists on this forum would like things to be :D

Wow alan even that caught me off guard hahaha.

I love the vuvuzela, i had my projector going and my surround sound up the entire game and i love it.

If i went to the game i would blow on that thing the entire game, well maybe not cause i smoke but you get the point and no alan i don't like it because it pisses anyone off.

I never said you did. Sufferwell on the other hand. I would have bet my house on him "liking" it. I'd say drug abuse might have something to do with it in your case :p:D

To me it's just pathetic noise. I don't identify it as an "African cultural" thing. Some Spanish clubs like Real Madrid also have mindless horn blowing as well. That irritates me too. Imagine trying to play in that noise as opposed to fans chanting your name, singing club songs or even Mexican waves. Now that is atmosphere and not just a wall of noise.
