Okay, if any one else out there, who drives a Vw chico 2000 model 1.3, and is having a problem starting up, this may help. My problem was that the starter motor would spin very fast, but the engine would not even turn. After trying a few times, the engine would turn a bit and then stop. Eventually, it would turn just enough to start the engine. If the engine stalled, it was back to square 1. Okay, many people would assume it's the solenoid. So I replaced that. Same problem. Then I replaced the brass bushes and amateur brushes. Same problem. No broken teeth on either of the flywheel or starter gear. Well, I purchased what they call a BENDIX, which is the starter gear part and the clutch type thing behind it, which looks like a bearing, fitted it and problem solved, cost me R 85.00. Hope this helps someone. Thank you.

Had same issue with my golf.
Solenoid did not fix the problem, so I just got a 2nd hand starter. (R450)
New Starter is +- R850

Where did you get the bendix for R85? I was quoted close to R225 for it. :wtf:

Shah's Motor Inn, along Inanda Rd, Durban. Very much out of my way, had someone passing that area pick it up for me. Best to have the part number and phone in to see if they got stock.
