Anybody know if there is a button press hack job to get this reset without having to plug it into anything?

My car is 6500km away from it's next service but for some reason also claims it's 15 days away which is getting crap irritating. I don't know if you reset the two values separately but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be ready for it's next service based on time yet.

So if I can just reset it myself I would prefer to just do that rather than have to take it in to have it done specially.

When last did you have it serviced? What's the mileage?

if I remember correctly on a polo, its to hold the button that resets the trip meter while turning the key to ACC at the same time,

don't know if it works, but I do remember seeing something like that listed in the manual......

There is a way to do it but it's important NOT to do it if the car's validly requesting a service - hence my questions.

If you're doing fairly low mileage, then the service is based on time, so I'd say that irrespective of km travelled, you need a service in 15 days time, which probably means that it was last serviced on the 20th of November 2013. Resetting it without doing the service will in all likelihood void your warranty and any maintenance plan, so I'd not do that unless you're already out of warranty.

Services are time and milage dependant. Which ever comes first. Maybe it's been a year since your last service. Most dealerships partially void your warrantee if you miss the yearly service.

I do fairly low mileage, so naturally my car was getting serviced yearly, not based on kilometres. Anyway, my service light has now been on for a few months and VW wont remove it unless I take it for a service but its not due for one.

I also have a golf 5, so if there is a sure legal way to get it removed please do tell!

This^^

Its been a year since it was reset, hence its giving you days as an indicator - Service plan and warranties fall away if you don't book before your time is up, I.E. you take it for service in a couple of months, when you're at you 15000km mark, and you need a new Cam belt. it wont be covered by the service plan (if you're on one). Same goes for warranty if your engine cracks or something stupid.

If you think its not right "timewise", have you got proof of the last service date?

I know how it works and I wouldn't have asked the question if I was worried about warranty's and motor plans.

The car is a 2008 model and well out of warranty and was services beginning of this year at 135000km.

On the day when I picked it up they had not reset the service indicator and I had to go back to get it sorted.

It's now at 14**** km and so needs to go for a service at 150 000km or so.

Thus my suspicion that it was reset for mileage only and not for time at the last service...if that is even possible using the VAG software.

Also considering I keep my own eye on the oil and do things like the brakes myself I'm not too worried about the time based services even if it wasn't services recently enough.

ok its a bit more involved that holding down the trip reset button like on the polo,

but close enough:

Thanks! Someone actually sticking to the question being asked rather than jumping in the wagon as if I'm retarded.

Bummer figured they would all be the same in the 5 line but apparently the GTI is different because I don't recall those buttons on the dash.

Well a reset is a reset. You can't reset mileage without resetting time...
Anyway if you're happy to do it...
1. Keys out of ignition- press and hold in trip odometer reset button "0.0" on right hand side of display
2. Still holding this button down, insert key into ignition and put to the on position without starting the car.
3. Display will read "service now"
4. let go of the "0.0" button and depress the "m" button on the left hand side of the display. this will re-set the service reminder. There is no confirmation on the display other than the words "service now" will disappear.

I also assumed a reset is a reset but then the okes struggled with their little box on the day and had to do it numerous times.

I can't recall if my dash has those buttons as I'm almost sure you set the time on the wheel itself, but hopefully it's easy enough to figure out.

I assumed it would be a crazy amount of buttons to press like getting the cash into that diagnostic mode to get values on the Climate Control screens.

Well, guess what? By getting aggressive with people who were offering advice based on the (incomplete) information you provided, you just proved that you are retarded.

I provided all the information required, including the fact that it's not ready for it's next service based on time yet.

But I figure nobody read that far.

But my apologies it was maybe a little bit too aggressive, I just felt slightly offended at the fact that after hundreds of posts in this section people would know that I have half a clue how cars and service intervals work.

Based on my involvement with the VW club, I feel I need to perform all due diligence before dispensing advice that may have an adverse effect on a vehicle. Done without prejudice.

Cool beans.

But maybe you are the best person to recommend a set of discs/pads for this car which I need to do soon enough.

Apparently there are different disc sizes so I should probably take the wheel off to measure them.

Stock stuff is ATE right? How is this Safeline brand I see everywhere these days?

I bought a set of ATE rear pads for my wife's Leon TDI from Goldwagen the other day. R300. I don't know Safeline... but take your car to Goldwagen if there's one nearby and ask the guys there to help you out - they will check your disc sizes etc if you need a hand.

I tend to make use of Goodhope Spares but there is also a Goldwagon close enough so I guess I'll call both.

Such a money making scheme with brakes.

Two services ago a different workshop told me the discs and pads need to be done and I said you must be joking there's a **** load of pad left and no sign of the disc wearing that thin yet.

Next service with different workshop jumping up and down about how I only have "5% left" and it's a safety problem. Needless to say there isn't even a hint of a squeal from the brakes and the pad sensors haven't gone off either. Got quoted a cool R7000 to do all four when I'm sure the parts are less than half that and it's a couple of bolts and job done.

Swopped tyres the other day and stuck my head in there while the wheels were off and there is the ever so slightest hint of the pads polishing the inside edge of the discs so I'll need to do them before the end of the year I figure.
