Hi All hoping someone may have been in the same situation...

Wife drive's a 2005 Polo and the tyre burst luckily close to home, went to put on the spare only to find the lock nut key is missing:mad:

Been to VW and they need the vehicle towed in so they can replace the whole set with a new one, not prepared to lend one to me. Also tried Goldwagen and a few of the local tyre outlets and it doesn't seem like they can help either.

Anyone aware of a place that might sell them, they are available on Ebay but I'm in a bit of a rush to get it sorted?

The care tyre repair places can remove it by force. They basically hammer a ring spanner attachment from a Socket set over the lock nut and then twist it off.
They then replace it with a normal nut.
You just have to pay them for the socket which is destroyed in the process and the new nut and the labour.

This is an option but it requires towing which Im trying to avoid having to pay for, if it comes down to it Ill have it towed to VW and get a new set so I dont have the same problem in future.

Yup, they vary though depending on the year

No, only certain models.
And they vary in size and shape.

Can we just clarify what the OP is talking about here? I mean on my car, all you need is a 17mmsocket or wheelspanner to remove the wheels. No lock nut, what ever that is.

The OP claims his lock nut is missing? So why doesn't he just run the car albeit slowly, with just regular wheel nuts until he gets to VW for a new one? Or does he mean the lock nut key?

Agree, if you are able to replace the wheel, then one missing wheel nut is not a problem provided you take things easy.

No you cannot replace only one "lock nut" if you mean "antitheft safety nuts", they come in sets of 4.

If the key is missing, then the same applies. You will need help to remove the others and replace all 4.

What happened to the old wheel nuts when you fitted the safety nuts? They should be kept in the car for emergencies.
Buy good ones as a replacement. The el cheapos are just a source of future problems.

Lastly, DO NOT allow anyone to tighten the "lock nuts" using an air pressure driven tool as they will in general overtighten the nuts and damage the nuts, making them impossible to remove easily when needed.

Yeah sorry, the lock nut key is missing.

Yeah, just destroy a socket then and remove them and pop the spare on. Will be the simplest and cheapest solution. Unless you can plug the tyre and inflate yourself to get the car to a nut place or VW?

His tyre is flat. The key is missing so he can't get the tyre off to change it.

Tried pumping up but it's not holding air long enough, might try getting a can of tyreweld to spray in to help keep it inflated long enough.

Just a puncture or is the tyre damaged? If a puncture, find a screw or something that fits tightly in the hole ram it in and pump. Better still if you have some patch adhesive handy. Done this before and does work, provided you do not have to far to go.

Had one in my VW Polo, found out on the way to work after a burst tyre mine was worn.
I had to bash it in with the tyre iron. Took a bit longer to do it, but got it done. Took it to a tyre place and had them all removed

Yeah, VW is a b$tch. They serviced my car and did not replace mine, had a flat and then there VW assist was delayed and delayed and delayed, sent wifey home, then waited more. they arrived and had the wrong nut, so had to get it towed and replaced the next day. Lock nuts are such a pain in the butthole

This happened to me a few years back. At Mr Exhaust, they welded another nut onto my lock nut and then removed it
