New Volkswagen Nivus: fresh Polo-based ‘urban coupé’ confirmed

Volkswagen has released a short teaser confirming its new Polo-based “urban coupé” will wear the “Nivus” nameplate (and not the "T-Sport" badge as previously thought).

According to Motor1.com, the as-yet-unrevealed Nivus will first be sold in Brazil in 2020 before hitting European markets at a later date. It’s not yet known whether there are plans to offer the newcomer in South Africa.

So, what do we know about the Nivus? Well, from what we understand it will effectively take the form of a crossover derivative of the popular Polo hatchback, slotting in below the T-Cross and running on the VW Group's familiar MQB A0 platform.

Based on what we can see in the teaser video embedded below, the Nivus will feature a raised ride height, a dramatically sloping (coupé-style) roofline and chunky roof rails, along with an extended rear overhang to accomodate a larger luggage area.

Volkswagen previews new Polo-based, coupe-inspired SUV

Volkswagen has given a name to its upcoming coupe-inspired compact SUV and to mark the occasion we now also get to see a new teaser image as well as a video (below) which reveals some of its design features.

The newcomer will be called the Nivus. It was designed in Brazil, but it will also be offered in other world markets including Europe, although at this stage there is no word on whether South Africans will get their hands on it too.

According to reports, the Nivus is based on the Polo, which would mean it’s also related to the T-Cross, but the styling appears to be completely unique to this vehicle and as you can see, it has a coupe-inspired silhouette that essentially takes some BMW X6 flavour into a much lower segment of the market.

Expect power to come from Volkswagen’s familiar 1-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol unit that also does service in other Polo-derived models and most versions will likely be tuned to 85kW, but it’s also possibly that VW might consider a 70kW entry level model.

Volkswagen is not saying much about the vehicle for now, simply stating that it will “revolutionise the market and inaugurate a new segment in 2020”. The little SUV is also described as the “face of New Volkswagen”.

VW has teased a new compact crossover. Think of it as a coupe variant of the wildly popular T-Cross; something that could ultimately work quite well in the South African market.

Although the Wolfsburg-based firm is being coy about the technical details, it has released the strategy around its Nivus cross-coupe. Due to debut in the Brazilian market next year, the Nivus is a cross-coupe built on VW’s current small car platform and, judging by the teaser images, the Nivus clearly has a coupe shape with a sloping roofline, with a crossover-esque ride height.

A generously proportioned rear end should ensure competitive luggage capacity despite the tapered roofline, plus the Nivus' tailgate features a slightly broader taillamp design than the T-Cross.

Developed on the very accomplished VW MQB A0 platform, the Nivus should have all the ride, handling and refinement attributes of a Polo, but with additional ground clearance.

It is expected to feature the same drivetrains as the derivatives in the T-Cross range, which means the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI turbopetrol engine should be the default powerplant.

New Volkswagen Nivus: Polo-based coupé-style crossover detailed

Volkswagen has released fresh images of its upcoming Nivus, showing the new Polo-based coupé-style crossover in light camouflage.

The Wolfsburg-based firm’s Brazilian arm says the new Nivus is “a little bit of everything”, claiming it will create an entirely new segment. Earlier reports suggested it would wear the “T-Sport” badge and indirectly replace the CrossPolo.

Set to be manufactured at the Anchieta plant and launched in Brazil in the next couple of months, the Nivus will be rolled out to other South American countries later in 2020. It is set to become the first model developed in Brazil that will also later be “produced and marketed” in certain European countries.

Like the Polo hatch and T-Cross, the new Nivus is built on the VW Group’s MQB A0 platform. It measures 4 266 mm in length (some 31 mm longer than the T-Cross) and 1 493 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2 566 mm (15 mm more space between the axles than the T-Cross).

Volkswagen Reveals Nivus Compact SUV

Volkswagen has unveiled another SUV. This one's called the Nivus and here's what it is all about.

Volkswagen's SUV offensive continues, with the production reveal of the Nivus compact crossover. It has been a long time coming, with plenty of teasers along the way. It's aimed at the South American market primarily, with a European-spec model due a bit later.

The Volkswagen Nivus is powered by the 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder motor with 95 kW and 200 Nm. This engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. In terms of safety spec, it boasts 6 airbags and adaptive cruise control, as well as autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection. In terms of features, it has what Volkswagen calls "VW Play", which is an infotainment system designed specifically for the Latin American market. This system features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a 10gb hard drive to store content.

It will be made in South America, with the Volkswagen plant in Pamplona, Spain starting assembly later. This plant makes the SA-spec Volkswagen T-Cross.

The Volkswagen Nivus arrives to make history. With an innovative design and new connectivity and streaming concepts, the Nivus comes out now in a totally digital world presentation, from Brazil to the world. The new model has been developed by Volkswagen South America and will be manufactured initially at the Anchieta factory, in São Bernardo do Campo, SP, to be commercialized in the South American market. In a second moment, the model will be made also in Europe.

The Volkswagen Nivus will be officially launched in the Brazilian market in mid-2020. In Argentina, the model will be in the dealerships at the end of the second half of 2020. The first semester of 2021 will be the time for the remaining South American markets to receive the Nivus. The model will be also launched in Europe, during the second half of 2021.

Volkswagen Nivus Heads For Production

Volkswagen revealed its new Nivus compact crossover last month and the model is now going into production.

Volkswagen’s Anchieta plant in Brazil is where the new Nivus is being produced for the Latin American market as well as for Europe. In fact, it’s the first time that a Volkswagen product built in Brazil will be offered in Europe. Production is also expected to start in 2021 at VW’s Pamplona plant.

The Nivus is underpinned by the same A0 MQB platform that produces the popular Polo which is also built in both Anchieta and Pamplona (which also produces the T-Cross).

An interesting fact about the Nivus is that it was developed using virtual and augmented reality which meant that there was no need for Volkswagen to build a prototype which is a typical practice in car production.

New Volkswagen Nivus crossover to reach Europe in late 2021

New compact model, based on the T-Cross SUV, has been launched in Brazil and will be sold in selected European markets

The Volkswagen Nivus, a compact crossover originally launched in South America and Mexico, will make its debut in European markets before the end of 2021.

Described as having a “sporty and vibrant” look along with a “peculiar character”, the Nivus is similar in positioning to the T-Cross in western Europe. However, it’s differentiated by a lower, coupé-style roofline and is longer and wider. It's based on the same MQB A0 platform as the Indian-market VW Taigun revealed earlier this year.

The Nivus's European launch was confirmed during Volkswagen's annual media conference and is set for the fourth quarter of the year. It will be closely followed by a facelifted version of the larger T-Roc SUV.

While the Nivus was developed specifically for the South American market, VW committed at its launch in 2020 to eventually offering it in certain European markets. These will likely focus on developing markets in eastern Europe, and it is not yet clear if it will be offered in the UK.
