VW Polo 1.4 tdi

I am flying to a different city to have a look and if satisfied buy a 2004 VW Polo 1.4 tdi. It has 175000 on the clock.
I have searched long and hard for this car and it seems to be the best I have found of these TDI's in my price range.
First question, are these cars worth the fuss? I know it is an older car, but this guy seems to have looked after it very well. I also had someone look at it and they were impressed.

Alternatively, I could buy a 2006 Merc C class compressor, C200, W203 with 180000km from a friend. I know the Merc it is in very good condition. I just fear service costs and costs for repairing something major like gearbox if I need to.

Any thoughts to help?

Polo tdi of that gen was and still is a great car. Full Service history will be a big bonus, also make sure you opt for a warranty , as turbo repairs and injector repairs can be quiet costly. Also what made you opt for the 1.4 over the 1.9?

I didn’t opt, I just went about looking for one that has been looked after and it turns out this one is good.

Well if you know it's been well looked after than go for it. It won't have the power of the 1.9 but still a solid car. Main thing is to check turbo condition

White smoke coming out the exhaust , usually indicates oil leaking into turbo. Would be good if you can see the car starting from cold,if the engine swings for a while before it starts generally it's compression issues.
