Good day, I need some help, my VW Polo 9n BBY engine recently have been getting strange issues.

The car takes a long crank before the engine starts then my rev (tachometer) goes dead and red oil light pops out, I have checked the oil pressure and oil is fine but as soon as the issue of dead tachometer and oil light the car consumes to much fuel and the sounds like a truck.

Sometimes when I start the car it will start normally and the RPM Meter (tachometer) will be fine and no oil light, the car drives smooth and normal, but then as I drive the car will jerk/hiccups then the tachometer dies and oil light pops out.

Few days ago I changed my coolant temperature sensor and the car behave way better but only for a week.... Then it started again. Any help....FYI I tried to hook up a OBD2 scanner but it won't connect....tried a few.

NB... I have sent it to a reputable mechanic in Nelspruit CDB (let me not name) but problem persisted.

Edit: When the vehicle is fine I also noted that the Rev counter jumps up and down when on idle

Unfortunately for that there are a few things.

  1. Dirty or faulty fuel injectors
  2. Faulty O2 sensor
  3. Dead or Failing Mass Air Filter
  4. Spark plugs
  5. Rare case battery is toast
  6. You've got a vacuum leak and you'll need to replace the head gasket.
Check your oil and see if it's milky. If it's milky it's related to your head.

Does the engine still run, but the tachometer is not displaying a reading? That in combination with the trouble starting sounds like the crankshaft position / engine speed sensor.

Air filter was changed few weeks ago...bought spark plugs also a few weeks ago, will get the injectors tested, will check the oil if it's milky

None of the recommendations explain why the OBD port isnt working.

Bad ECU?

This should be your first place to investigate.

ECU would throw off other things though? But yeah actually fuel mix would be one of them. ECU isn't cheap

@BlackMamba You should look in your owners manual and look for the fuse for the OBD port, it could be blown.

To test, replace fuse and connect a multi meter on pins 4 or 5 and 16

It should give you 12V.

If you still cant connect the scan tool you can take the ECU to a repair shop, there is one in JHB called Auto ECU, very good place that fixes ECU's.
