Would you take your, say, S2000 to someone who may not be familiar with it?

Granted this is a VW I guess you're right. Just pointing out that for some cars, I wouldn't take it anywhere else...
 
The "rule" is not hard & fast. It's very much case by case. Having said there would be expert eg. S2K people who know their vehicles in & out. Depends on how much you value or place on a dealer service jobbie.
 
A friend of mine was quoted R13000 for a clutch change on his 2008 Toyota Auris 1.6.....I think thats crazy.

Not really. Oil and filters will maybe be 1k at a reasonable service centre, and you can get the timing belt done for close on 3.5k.
 
Just paid R1800 for a first service on a Figo so R6008 does not sound to bad .
 
R800 per hour translates into R13.33 per minute.

When you watch a mechanic at work, many minutes go to waste and you pay for them: Looking for a tool, wiping his hands, waiting for parts, hooking up equipment.

However the moral of the story is that if you can't do it yourself, you have to pay.
OR, if you are earning more than R800 per hour rather let the mechanic do it.
 
+ plus so many properly flea markets have those DIY books for cheap! Lol

I needed to have a water pipe replaced on my 12 year old Audi A4. I contacted a nearby private service center, and asked for a quote. They would send somebody out, which they never did. After phoning three days in succession to follow up, I gave up and took the car to Audi itself. After the service I received that will be the last time though.

Clutches are cheap, dual mass flywheels (which is like every dsg and manual transmission these days) are what's flipping expensive.

If you must have the stamp, do everything yourself, and send your car in for just an oil change.

Oil, filters, etc. Sure. To be honest, I don't trust myself enough to change the timing belt/chain on a modern engine. I'd rather pay the dealership to take responsibility for that work.
 
Chrysler charged me almost R8k for a standard 100 000km service. This surely means they double charged me because how can a 150k km service with VW only cost R6k ?

That's exactly why I prefer to go to a dealer. You don't pay them for doing the job, you pay them to take responsibility. There are various ways for you to kick up a fuss if they refuse to, and usually end up caving in to prevent reputational damage. With an independent you have little recourse...
