So today I took my 2010 polo tdi in for a service and also for an oil leak check as I knew there was one.

long story short turns out it is the turbo that is leaking. quote to repair is R16k.

does this seem fair/good price?

I have only had the car a little over a year now. and this bill is putting me off. considering selling the car for a loss.

thoughts?

What engine does your polo have? Leaking what?

There are other options, you can probably get a refurbished turbo fitted for less than half that.

Aftermarket... bulletproof and cheap

1.6tdi

oil is leaking apparently from the turbo or into the turbo.

where can I get those? do you know how much it is more or less?

Oil seal is worn. you can Recore. aftermarket you need to get hold of the racing guys over there. I'm sure there are some forums detailing builds and modifications.

All engines have been Turbo'd already. don't know anybody on the Cape side of racing though.

Is this at the dealership?

Take your car straight to Engine Techniques in Brackenfell.

They are a VW/Audi specialist and will give you a reliable second opinion.

If that really is the problem they’ve give you are better price too.

Definitely not worth selling at a loss. Even if it really is the Turbo it’s a fix that will last for many thousands of kilometres to come. Especially now that you are the owner and can look after it better.

Dude! **** no!

Please be careful if you went to a dealership. 2 weeks back, my friend (drives a CrossPolo TDI) had this very issue. They replaced the entire oil thingamajig* (Originally quoted R9k, somehow discounted to R7k) - the problem? - The seals/gaskets needed to be replaced. An expensive lesson he learnt.

That said, perhaps get another opinion at TurboMaster in Cannon Street (Maitland) - near M5 Business Park, off Berkley road. They will TLC your Turbo before replacing it etc.

EDIT: I dont know cars very well; I forgot the name. Ask me about computers lol.

so I took my car for a second opinion...

some back story:
about 8 or so months back my car's egr valve packed up. I took it to a few places to get quotes.

Autoworks came in as the cheapest... because they under quoted the labour accidentally as I foind out afterwards.

they "fixed" it and told me that they under quoted but would stand by the quote.

I thought this was great and thought I would use them for the next service also.

the next service was last week at which point I knew there was this bit of an oil leak. so I asked them to look at it. They gave me the R16k quote which I got a second opinion on.

The guy I spoke to told me that he did the diagnosis scan and it says nothing about turbo. he also tested it and said boost is fine.

the report says the egr valve is the problem. I told him my back story and he said no I should go back to them and query it because that part should have at least 1 year warranty and also it should not give this issue so soon after replaced.

so now I am quite pissed off. Even though autoworks under quoted do I still have the right to get this fixed at their expense?

If not it will still cost me another R12k to fix.

I always insist on getting my old broken parts back afterwards, just so that I know something was actually replaced.

Although if they were devious enough, they could probably still fool me.

Even under quoting they should still carry the warrantee.

Option 1 let them fix it at there cost
Option 2 If you do not get it sorted have the EGR valve blanked off. it is useless and makes the intake very dirty. remap and enjoy better performance and consumption
