The name has been revealed of VW’s new small SUV. It will be built in SA as well.

Volkswagen Tera: mystery small SUV’s name revealed!

Volkswagen Tera: that’s the name of the German firm’s upcoming mystery small SUV – which will also be built in SA – as announced by VW’s Brazilian division…

What will VW’s upcoming mystery small SUV be called? Well, the German firm’s Brazilian division has released a single image of the so-called A0 Entry SUV’s tailgate badge, revealing that it will be known as the “Volkswagen Tera”.

As a reminder, VW’s Brazilian arm – which is leading the design and development of this new model, and will also produce it at its Taubaté factory – dropped the first official teaser image in September 2024, ahead of a 2025 release in that market.

Thanks to a R4-billion investment, the Tera will also be produced alongside the Polo hatch and Polo Vivo at the Kariega facility here in South Africa, though only from early 2027. Of course, VW Group Africa has yet to confirm whether the SA-spec version (set to slot in below the T-Cross) will indeed wear this badge in Mzansi, though we’d speculate the chances are high.

Volkswagen’s new SA-built compact SUV - more puzzle pieces come together

Volkswagen is set to build a new compact SUV in South Africa from 2027, and now we’re getting a clearer picture of how it might look.

The carmaker confirmed in April this year that it was investing R4 billion to produce this “third model” alongside the Polo and Polo Vivo at its Kariega manufacturing facility in the Eastern Cape.

Volkswagen SA Chief Executive Martina Biene said the new model would be based on the Polo’s MQB AO platform and that it was being developed in conjunction with VW of Brazil, but that some adaptations would be made for Africa.

But hold all those thoughts for a moment, because VW’s Skoda brand has just revealed a new sub-four-metre SUV in India called the Kylaq and international media are reporting that it is closely related to the new compact SUV that Volkswagen will launch in Brazil in 2025.

The two models are likely to share their basic bodyshell, and possibly many interior components too, but front and rear styling will be unique.

This ties in with the Volkswagen Brazil teaser images that have been released thus far, showing design cues influenced by the Tiguan.

Volkswagen’s new SA-built affordable SUV spied with minimal disguise - meet the Tera!

Spy photographers have snapped the most revealing images yet of the Volkswagen Tera, which is a new entry-level SUV for emerging markets.

It is believed that this is the “SUV-type” vehicle that Volkswagen plans to build in South Africa, following a R4 billion investment that was announced in 2024.

VWSA Chief Executive Martina Biene said at the time that the vehicle was being developed by the company’s Brazilian arm, but that some adaptations would be made for African markets.

The spy shots reveal the new SUV with minimal camouflage, showing a compact but coupe-like silhouette and full-length taillamp clusters.

Judging by earlier teaser images, the vehicle has a slim front grille closely resembling the latest Tiguan, meaning the larger ‘lip’ on the prototype is surely a ruse.

All should be revealed in the coming months however.

VW will be banking on this.

Would have been nice if it could be earlier.

Another 2 years is a long time in this industry the way things are going.

Volkswagen Tera revealed: new compact SUV set to be built in South Africa

Volkswagen has fully revealed the exterior and interior of its new Tera compact SUV, which is set to be built in South Africa from 2027 as part of a R4 billion investment.

The Volkswagen Tera made its first public outing at the Rio Carnival on Sunday, but technical information on the new model has yet to be revealed.

It is widely believed that this is the new ‘third model’ that Volkswagen South Africa will build at its plant in Kariega from 2027, but it will reportedly receive a new name for the local market and the company says the product will feature adaptations for the African market.

Formed around Volkswagen’s MQB-AO platform, the Tera is closely related to the Polo hatchback, which it will be built alongside at Kariega.

With the latter being a major export model for the local operation, but one facing an uncertain future as Europe shifts to electric vehicles, the Tera’s introduction will aim to diversify the factory’s production portfolio.

The new compact SUV will be positioned below the T-Cross and although it’s too early to speculate on pricing, it is likely to compete with the likes of Kia’s Sonet, Mahindra’s XUV 3X0 as well as the Suzuki Fronx and Toyota Starlet Cross siblings.
