Frankfurt - Porsche SE's controlling families will agree on Thursday to accept an offer by Volkswagen to buy its sports car business Porsche AG for roughly 8 billion euros ($11.28 billion), Der Spiegel reported on Saturday.

Germany's leading weekly magazine wrote that the rival Porsche and Piech clans, which own 100% of Porsche SE votes, will approve the two-stage takeover at a supervisory board meeting on July 23.

Volkswagen would purchase a 49.9% stake in Porsche AG and at a later date acquire the rest, in a deal that would create an integrated automotive group with 10 brands under the leadership of the Wolfsburg-based carmaker.

The sale would help Porsche SE pay off most of its debt, which two sources told Reuters has ballooned to considerably more than 10 billion euros.

Wiedeking out?

Der Spiegel also said embattled Porsche SE and Porsche AG chief executive Wendelin Wiedeking is negotiating over a severance package that could total more than 100 million euros. In the meantime, production chief Michael Macht will replace him as head of Porsche AG, the magazine reported.

On Thursday, Wiedeking rejected speculation he was about to leave the group.

Asked on Saturday whether the two families have reached a decision for the July 23 board meeting, Porsche spokesman Anton Hunger said "we have not been informed of one," adding that the Spiegel report was speculation that the company would not comment on.

Separately rival German weekly magazine Focus reported that Volkswagen's powerful chairman and part-owner of Porsche, Ferdinand Piech, plans to remove Wiedeking on Thursday from the influential six-man steering committee on the VW supervisory board.

The vacancy could open up the opportunity for Piech's cousin and rival, Wolfgang Porsche, VW supervisory board member and Porsche SE chairman, to replace Wiedeking in the committee as a representative of his side of the family.

The grandfather of Wolfgang Porsche and Ferdinand Piech was Ferdinand Porsche, designer of the Beetle and founder of Volkswagen.

Porsche did buy controlling shares in VW, but then they went down, or very close to going down, so now VW wants to buy them out... something like that.
Interesting to see the founding families battling it out till today...

Porsche's financial position is growing desperate as the German state bank KfW has postured it would deny the carmaker a critical €1.75bn debt servicing loan.

One of the world's last remaining independent sporstcar manufacturers, Porsche, despite enjoying strong sales and running with production efficiencies envied by all other manufacturers, has gambled and stands to lose severely in an aborted take over bid for VW.

Porsche's debt burden is a consequence of the company's audacious attempt (though some would speculate the Porsche family's personal ambition) to takeover the whole VW Group.

This aborted takeover of VW has left Porsche with 51% of the voting stake in Europe’s largest car maker by sales, yet saddled it up with over €9bn in debt too, which means pretty chunky interest payments.

Those interest payments are so chunky, in fact, current sales levels (in a heavily depressed market) are only enough to service the cost of debt, not pay it off.

Ouch, seems like they were to greedy to get hold of VW, now they dont have enough to run the company....

Actually the way I'm reading that article is that Porsche AG will now become integrated into the VW stable.... its not about the Porsche families not controlling VW anymore, because they still do... Porsche SE still own 51% of the voting stock of VW....

accept that its a Polo, and that even though porsche have the laziest design studio in the universe they still make cars that look a million times better than the polo ever could... and that INCLUDES the Cayenne which is probably the ugliest damn SUV to ever have been conceived.
