T-Sport coming? VW confirms 'New Urban Coupé' will debut in 2020

Volkswagen has confirmed its “New Urban Coupé” will be revealed in 2020 before production starts at the Anchieta plant in Brazil later that year.

Interestingly, the Wolfsburg-based company says the new model will also be built in Europe from 2021 and “sold in other international markets”.

Earlier reports suggested the new model would effectively replace the Cross Polo, slotting in below the T-Cross and eventually wearing the “T-Sport” badge. As you can tell from the accompanying teaser image, it will feature a coupé-like sloping roofline.

The newcomer will based on the MQB platform, with VW claiming it will combine “sportiness with a high driving position”. It will be designed and developed in Brazil.

After Volkswagen announced a massive investment into its Brazil facilities, it also teased what the factory will be producing.

Volkswagen has announced an almost 0 million investment into its operations in and around Sau Paulo. Volkswagen of Brazil then said it would be building a vehicle which was 100% developed in South America and shared the teaser sketch you see here.

At first glance, we're thinking its a sportier coupe version of either the Volkswagen T-Roc or Tiguan, which should look terrific. Expect a name beginning with a "T" naturally.

Volkswagen Brazil's new 'Urban Coupe' SUV to launch in 2020

- World premiere of the Brazilian 'New Urban Coupé' is planned for spring 2020
- Production will commence at the Anchieta plant in 2020 and the vehicle will also be built in Europe from 2021
- Volkswagen is investing €1.5-billion in Brazil through 2020 under its regionalisation strategy

For the first time, Volkswagen Brazil is developing a vehicle based on the modular transverse toolkit MQB completely in-house; the model is also to be produced later in Europe and sold on other international markets.

The vehicle based on the MQB will be designed and developed in Brazil. Known as the "New Urban Coupé" it combines sportiness with a high driving position. The world premiere is planned for spring 2020. Production will commence at the Anchieta plant in the same year and the vehicle will also be built in Europe from 2021.

The automaker is looking to strengthening the economic significance of of its Brazilian arm with the regionalisation of the South American market. Through 2020, Volkswagen is investing around €1.5-billion in Brazil in the development of new products, digitalisation and technological innovations.
