Hallo - After having no Telkom landlines for 6 months due to cable theft, today two Telkom guys popped up at my place in Broederstroom (a rural area) to install two W-CDMA sets. After a hour I could have normal house comms again at normal Telkom rates, that are substantially cheaper than cellphone rates.

I asked about Internet connection on the W-CDMA but the guys were sort of holding something back (the one guy said they were not promoting it) - I didn't pursue it any further. I couldn't make much sense of the problem on the Telkom website so I will ask here if someone could help.

Is it possible to use the W-CDMA connection that I now have to get access to the Internet. If so how fast and how much. I currently use Vodacom HSDPA but the quality of the connection is very spotty. Thanks.

Thanks moggie - I see the data cost is exactly the same as Vodacom. I assume the Telkom hardware is installed on the same tower as the Vodacom hardware (the only one near to my place). I have a mountain between me and the tower so I assume the Telkom HSDPA will also be a bit spotty at times.

No, currently the majority of Telkom's w-cdma network is running off their own towers and/or buildings.

If it is on the same "vodacom" tower then it is probably a Telkom tower with vodacom equipment on it, but I doubt it, especially if there is a mountain in the way!

CyberMatrix, what type of device did they install? Do you hav a model number?

If Telkom supplied you with one of the Huawei Telephone sets, you can connect to the Internet using a normal USB cable. This instrument will however only run at 3G speeds namely 384kbps down and 64kbps up.

I can confirm that--I tested the USB cable through phone last night when Telkom guy came to test my site for W-CDMA signal. speed is not so hot via USB, and connection kept dropping for me; but the dongle connection (getting HSDPA/UPA speeds) was amazing--stable, even when moving in the house.
