Hi
I would like to know if South African W202s support OBD. I would like to buy one of those OBD scanners you can hook up to your phone/tablet with bluetooth, and also a W202, preferably 1997 (because I'm now quite handy with the M111 engine).

Has anyone owning a W202 tried to use one of these scanners, and did it work? The information on the Internet is largely geared towards American vehicles, where OBD was already a standard in 1996. I understand that our Mercs here had a 38-pin port. There are adapters for this 38-pin port to the 16-pin OBD port, but I cannot figure out if this will work as expected on a W202 here.

Buying one from ZASTTRA online shop should set me back around R270 incl. shipping, but feedback from the community would save me from buying something I might not even be able to use.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think the 38 pin connector is obd2 compatible.

Thanks :)
Guess for basic things then one can just use blink tester. I know this works, and can still give a good clue, just less fancy than OBD2.

I have carsoft and I'm not too far away if you need to do some diags. It should read a 202

Lekker. How much would you charge to hook one up? You're welcome to pm/email if you prefer :-)

For those who may be interested, yes, the 38-pin port is useable with generic OBD readers for all 1997-2001 Mercs with ME-SFI engine management.
So it works just fine with my 1999 C230K for reading and clearing codes. Of course to see other systems (e.g. ABS), you need "real" tools such as Carsoft.

Pin 1 of 38-pin port is ground, Pin 3 is positive, and pin 4 is engine, where you can read obd data.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you blow up your car or ECU with this information. but it works very well for me. For example, I can now get live data off my naughty MAF in real-time as it dips and causes all sorts of problems with my rpm :(

carsoft is next in my list of must-haves.

haha looks like your hack is better than carsoft at live data!
