Hi there, does anyone know where around Gauteng one can buy a spare W204 (FL) key?, Mercedes agents are to expensive.
Obviously they will need to program it as well :P

I am sure the agents can do a reset or something if it loses sync with the car but as far as I know only Merc head office can do the programming of a new key, and you would also need the laser cut code for the metal part of the key.

Reason I say this is I very recently got a new key for my w204 FL and after providing merc with a ton of certified paper work the key was ordered from Germany. The new key arrived in a security sealed package, was opened in front of me and the key worked immediately. No programming or nothing was done. Key unlocked and started the car straight out of the package.

That said it was cheaper than I thought it would be. I paid just over R2800 for a new remote and blade. Got here in two weeks.

I just got of the phone with a locksmith, he informed me he just needs my car for 2 hours and he can do it. Cost is also R2800, if thats the casr i will rather use merc. Which papers did you need?

I strongly doubt the locksmith understood you correctly, from what I gathered while doing the research on this is that a key can only be programmed once, so the locksmith would need a new blank original Mercedes key. You cant buy a second hand key and have it paired to your car(confirmed by MB Centurion). The second hand ones and even new ones you can order online is just a case, you would need to use the old internals and blade. He would also have to cut the blade using the old one as an example(which I dont think will work)

Insurance is a good idea to try. Also if you have not lost the key and it only stopped working it will be covered under maintenance agreement.

If the car is not under finance its relatively easy to sort out. I had to submit a lot of papers.

Bank letter authorizing that new key can be made.
Copy of person signing said letter's ID.
Proxy letter from bank giving that person authority to sign.
Copy of NATIS with bank stamp and certified, not by CoO but by bank.
Proof of address, certified
ID book
ID copy, certified

Still have all the emails from Merc, they are very very strict with keys. Also all the paper work gets sent to Germany so you dont get any of it back.

No labor charges as the key arrives fully working from Germany.

Ag no, im getting a headache just reading that

i called the dealership i bought the car from, they referred me to the locksmith, I called them and told them I only have 1 key and I need a spare. He said no problem, asked the make and model, said he needs 2 hours with the car and it will be finished. I have no idea if the blade is included, But now this sounds much simpler that jumping through hoops getting a spare key for a car I own.

Yes its a major pain to get the keys from Merc. I cursed, shouted and begged a lot.

I am actually quite interested in how the locksmith would do it, if you do decide to go that route please post again. My concern is not if he can actually pair the key with the car but where he gets the key and how it will look. I researched this a lot and all the info I found said a key can only be paired with one car ever, so its not like he can buy keys from scraped cars and then re-code for a new car. Also the blade will still be a problem.

If any locksmith can code any key(either blank or from another car) to any car then that really says a lot about the security of our cars.

Also really not sure why he would need 2hours with the car, a simple key sync cant take that long and as I said mine came from Germany already working.

All in this took me about 4weeks to sort out. So I would like to know if you do come right.

If the car is not under finance all you need to take to a Merc dealer is your natis documents, your id and proof of residence.
