W3 Tower Defence

Firstly apologies if this is the wrong section, tapatalk is refusing to post in root. Got a friend that has never seen a multi-player game ever but was a big fan of the tower defence maps and even some Dota 1 back in the LAN days. He's coming to visit and I wud really like for him to experience the fun and some of the tools of the online community.
Grabbed my old trusty version of W3FT but alas connecting to the battle net servers was a no go.
If there anyone that has done that of late and can maybe give me some pointers?

What do you mean? Just click battle.net button and log in with your account.
I googled, the servers are still up.
 
Uhm Yea... About that. My copy of the game was one I inherited from a long line of special friends.. And the battle net button did in fact work way back in the day, but I suspect alot of changes has been made of late, and it's no longer as relaxed to get on as it used to be.
