Hi there

I have had an outbreak of this W32 Viking infection. I have tried Zone-alarm and Nod32 but I still cannot remove it.

Does any1 know of a good remover that is free to scan and remove???

thanks

Even if you find a scanner that will pick it up it wont be removed. Its a bit clever.

Even if there is a copy in system32 or documents and settings its not the original. Long and short of it is that like other its infects .exe's. So trying to install and run a AV program on host pc wont work. Either install blocked or virus 'could' be embedded, almost like a root-kit.

Take another computer that is clean and do one of two things or both.

1. Install a antivirus program: Nod32 or Kaspersky and you cant go wrong. Make sure they are fully updated. Plug your infected harddrive into clean computer and do a 'comprehensive' scan.

2. Your second bet is to download a viking removal tool. This will remove some malware but viking is also a downloader so other malware variants will be on your pc.

You should act quickly and not expose your infected computer to the internet any longer than it should. Because like a mentioned earlier the last thing you need is a root-kit and then you might as well format. Even if you remove it your windows is pretty damaged and will need reinstall.

Viking was one of the most popular infection started from late 2006 in China. Lots of variations and All Chinese Antivirus Vendor released special removal program for this family. Don't think you can read chinese so I will not give you the link to download, but from my previous experiences, Cureit from Dr.web is a very handy program for such infection. ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe Click to download, free scanner. But there's always risk involved in repairing infected executables. Be warned. some of the files won't run becasue although viral code was removed from itself but file was changed and won't pass self check.

Good Luck!

If the removal tools fail then share all the drives on the infected PC and map the drives over a LAN. Then scan the mapped drives from a clean PC with an up-to-date AV. Make sure you have admin rights ;)

I'd advise against plugging the drives directly into another PC.
