The Cintiq is a beautifully designed tablet with a pretty impressive trick up its sleeve: its drawing surface is an LCD, which means that you draw directly onscreen. Need we say more?
Traditional tablets, innovative as they are, have always had one major shortfall: the drawing surface is not the same as the display surface. It makes detailed drawing difficult and it takes a while to get used to.
The Cintiq is Wacom’s top-of-the-line tablet and instead of a regular touch-sensitive drawing area, it sports a touch-sensitive LCD. No wonder it is such a desirable graphics tool.
The unit we received for review is the intiq 12WX, which, as its name implies, is the 12-inch version. The Cintiq is a remarkably sexy tablet and resembles the type of device we’d expect to see in the next Transformers movie.
Wacom also clearly paid attention to usability and comfort when they set out to design the Cintiq. For one thing, the larger CD sits flush with the chassis and the edges are slightly rounded. On the back of the tablet, you will find a hidden stand that allows you to set the Cintiq at a comfortable drawing angle.
There are also two sets of customisable buttons situated on either side of the LCD. These ten programmable hotkeys will allow you to map your most commonly used shortcut keys or pop-up menus.
Connecting the Cintiq to your computer is a slightly more complicated process than your average drawing tablet. Considering the fact that it uses an LCD, the Cintiq requires a free VGA port on your graphics card.
This could be problematic for dual-monitor users, but adding an entry-level PCI-E graphics card for dedicated Cintiq use should solve that problem.
Once the USB cable nd VGA cable have been connected to the Cintiq via the small Wacom DVI/VGA switch, your computer will detect the Cintiq as another display device.
The display and drawing resolution of this tablet is 1,280 x 800 - not entirely a standard resolution, but it’s large enough to comfortably display any graphics application you might use it with.
During the review period, we handed the Cintiq 12WX to one of our designers. He doodled some hot girls, designed some ogos and had only good things to say about the Cintiq. Needless to say, it was not easy getting it back from him.
As a design and graphic artist tool, the Cintiq is already making waves in those industries overseas.
The 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity add a remarkable touch of realism to the digital canvas you draw on, and if you use applications such as Corel Painter X, you will find the accuracy imperative for achieving the desired results.
