I'm pretty sure texting while driving must now count for one of the leading causes of traffic incidents.

so the people advocating that cellphones are harmful to health are right ...

just as always they focus on un-established nonsense rather than actual instances of harm for which the operators take active steps to mitigate

kudos to VC on this though

I wish, too, that this epidemic be eradicated from our roads. But, will a "pledge" really be enough. I say bring back the death penalty...

The two study researchers found an estimated 1,500 people were treated in the ER for injuries related to cellphone use while walking in 2010. That's more than double the 256 such injuries reported in 2005 and the 559 such injuries reported in 2004.

Some examples from the study include a 23-year-old man who suffered a hip contusion after being struck by a car while walking on a road and talking on his phone; another young man, 28, lacerated his brow after walking into a pole while talking on the phone; and a teen boy, 14, suffered a chest wall contusion after he fell 6 to 8 feet (about 2 meters) off a bridge and into a ditch while walking down a road while on a cellphone.

If the law of the land doesn't get 'em, the laws of physics will. The sad thing is drive-texters often involve other people in their recklessness. Not paying full attention to your driving is so bad it can kill innocent people. When I see it, I give 'em a piece of my mind, usually summarised in colloquial terms not easily misunderstood.
