Wait what is this?!...it's the 2016 Audi A4! (B9)

Audi takes A4 Allroad and A6 Allroad off sale in UK

Off-road-ready estates are no longer available to order and future generations won't come here

Audi has ended UK sales of the rugged A4 Allroad and A6 Allroad estates and has no intention of importing any future generations.

The decision was taken due to the variants accounting for only a small proportion of sales for their respective model lines.

Audi sold 292 examples of the A4 Allroad in 2021, for example, compared with 446 of the significantly more potent and expensive RS4 Avant, accounting for just over a thirtieth of total A4 sales.

The larger A6 Allroad was an even slower seller, shifting just 256 units in the UK last year, less than half the number of RS6 Avants sold in the same period and just 4.4% of A6 sales.

Neither variant is now available to configure on Audi UK's website, and a spokesman confirmed to Autocar that the German brand has no plans to bring any future Allroad models here.

Audi To Rename Its Cars

The Ingolstadt-based brand has a new naming strategy to differentiate between internal combustion engine and electric power.

Rumours have been plentiful about Audi’s new naming structure, but finally Audi has confirmed it. At Audi AG’s Annual Media Conference, CEO Markus Duesmann said the new next-generation Audi A4 will be sold as the A5, while the A6 will become the A7.

Essentially, Audi products with odd numbers (3, 5, 7) will be powered by internal-combustion engines, while the even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8) will have electric powertrains. We’re already seeing this with the launch of the Audi Q8 e-tron, and it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to image the ICE-powered Q8 to become the Q7/Q9.

But what about the current-generation electric vehicles with the e-tron name? Well, Duesmann has confirmed it won’t be dropped, which is interesting, as Mercedes-Benz is considering offloading its EQ brand with new vehicles due in 2024, while BMW will continue to use the ‘i’ as a way of showcasing its EV range.

We’re expecting a quiet year locally for Audi South Africa, but Audi global has quite a few products on the way, with a successor to the Audi A4 earmarked for a global debut at some point in 2023. The Audi A6 is due for an update soon too. Audi is expected to continue to build ICE-powered vehicles until the early 2030s even though it won’t introduce any new ICE models beyond 2026.

Audi A4 to become A5 under new naming strategy that sees even numbers go to EVs

Audi is about to commence with the biggest product expansion in its history, with a vast array of new internal combustion and electric models set to debut in the next few years, but customers will need to get used to a new naming strategy.

Speaking at the company’s 2023 Annual Media Conference, Audi CEO Markus Duesmann confirmed that the carmaker was currently restructuring its naming convention in a move that would ultimately lead to all electric models having even numbers in their names, while all internal combustion models would get odd digits.

Duesmann also said that 2024 would see Audi launching a new platform called PPC, which will underpin the last-generation of combustion models.

The CEO confirmed to Auto Bild that the current A4’s successor would wear an A5 badge, while the next-gen A6 would upgrade to A7 badging.

The A4, A6 and A8 names will be used on upcoming electric vehicles.

Why the Audi S4 Is So Damned Great at Being Just Good Enough

The Audi S4 isn't the most exciting choice when compared with other hot German compact sedans, but it's probably the one you should buy.

There’s this saying that a person’s eyes are bigger than their stomach, and I can say that this translates well to people’s needs for a daily driver. The S4 is nowhere close to the best car I’ve driven in the last year, but it would certainly be on my shortlist for cars I’d actually want to live with, especially if it were going to be my only vehicle.

Upgraded Audi A4 to become new A5 as firm rebrands line-up

Audi A5 will be the marque’s mainstream ICE offering parallel to an electric A4

The Audi A4 is set to be rebranded to A5 as Audi rethinks its branding for the hybrid era, designating internal-combustion-engined cars with odd numbers.

Spotted testing at the Nürburgring ahead of its debut, the new A5’s styling is a clear evolution of the current model's, with more angular headlights and a larger, flatter, front grille.

New images captured by Autocar’s spy photographers also reveal a new LED lighting signature at the rear end, similar to that on the facelifted Audi Q8 E-tron and running across the boot.

Higher-performance S5 models will be marked out from the base car by a slightly more aggressive front bumper – with wider duct openings on each flank – and four tailpipes.

According to well-placed Ingolstadt insiders, a hybrid RS5 will top the range. This is likely to mirror the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance – the first range-topping C-Class AMG to use a plug-in hybrid powertrain rather than a V8. This RS5 is expected to retain today’s twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V6, with electrification set to boost its outputs beyond the current 444bhp and 443lb ft.

2025 Audi A4 goes electric with 400-mile range and 510bhp S4

Tesla Model 3 rival will slot into the firm's growing E-tron range and get 510bhp S4 version

The Audi A4 will make the switch to an all-electric powertrain, three decades after its introduction, as the Ingolstadt brand gears up to contend with BMW, Mercedes, Tesla and a raft of new disruptors in the crucial electric executive segment.

Due on sale towards the end of 2025, the electric A4 will be sold alongside a new-generation combustion equivalent – evolved from today’s car but wearing the A5 nameplate in line with Audi’s new naming strategy, which allocates even numbers to EVs.

The electric car will be marketed clearly as a stand-alone product, despite its similar footprint and positioning, with a design that closely matches that of the A6 and Q6 E-tron EVs with which it shares Audi’s and Porsche’s new co-developed PPE architecture.
