Hey all,

Any wakeboarders here (or anyone that knows a bit about boats)? Im hoping to get into wakeboarding. I've done it a bunch of times with friends and have decided to start looking into getting a boat. I've heard a bunch of terms thrown around for what's generally looked for in a wakeboarding boat like: inboard motor, v-drive, etc. But some say that stuff is not really necessary but it depends on budget a lot.

What would 100k buy? Would a 2nd hand semi-decent wakeboarding boat be possible for that? What brands/models would you recommend?

I cant seem to find any SA wakeboarding forums/communities to get any info. Im not sure where to even start. I live in JHB but I dont know where there are any 2nd hand dealers.

Any advice would be appreciated,
Thanks.

I have found that most ppl who get boats, use them often for the first 2months, then pull it out once a year if that.
Its a large investment, just make sure you want to do this often enough to justify it

Yup, definitly a big decision and not one to take lightly. Thanks for the advice.

Does anyone have any info on the questions I asked in the original post? Thanks.

i defintely think 100k is enough.

You could pick up a second hand ski boat (although you do get specific boats for wb'ing, correct v shaped hull to produce the right kind of wake and height etc). Inboard motor generally for any kind of water sport is better, but outboards work as well. I learned to wakeboard on an acecraft deep v hull with 2 outboard 60hp engines. Generally a good sea fishing boat but worked very well for wb'ing because it was heavy and cut quite nicely into the water.

Obviously you being in Josi there are a million places that sell the right type of boats, and im sure you can pick up a second hand one for about 50k if you just plan on doing this recreationally. If you wanting to go professional then spending the cash may be justified but if not, theres no point.

I would say you should look for a 10-15 footer with about 100 horses under the deck, or above, either or.

+1 A waste of money if you ask me.

If you are going to buy a boat you just need something that throws a big wake, power is not that important. We used to wakeboard behind a jetski but the wake was small.

These days we just surf, it's free, you don't have to tow it, you need not worry about crap flowing into the dam etc etc etc.

Yup, buying a boat is by no means a financially clever purchase or a sound investment. It would be purely for enjoyment and to enjoy weekends out on a dam living life in the sun :)

Anyone else into wakeboarding or know a bit about boats/prices? Any advice would help.

I'm not sure what second aircraft carriers go for, but should be sufficient. Are you planning on wakeboarding in a river? A carrier might be overkill in that case. Also, try get a nuclear one and not diesel. Will repay in the long run, plus you can sell the rods to Al qaeda thereby getting quicker ROI.

Checkout places like Boating international (edenvale) and waterworld (randburg).

Proper wakeboarding boats like your mastercrafts and malibu's are in the R1m range bran new, and 2nd hand is also very expensive, around R300 000 - R500 000, and dont forget you will need a powerfull vehicle to tow these suckers, they are huge.

I do alot of wakeskating, and i use a Deep V hull outboard 125HP boat, it is great for wakeskating and OK 'ish for wakeboarding, a inboard motor is the way to go for a big wake.

Cool, will do thanks. If I do end up deciding to go for it,...my budget will be around 100k max. So Mastercrafts and the like are definitly not an option. Im just trying to figure out which boats/brands/models etc are suitable for wakeboarding in the 100k range second hand.
