Howzit.

Has anyone "hacked" their linksys to obtain dual WAN and load balancing functionalities?

I have tried the Roadrunner guide but because of a lack of further knowledge never went further to test it.
If you / anyone do get it to work - post away :)

you cant do it. you have no control over traffic you receive, only traffic you send.

Dual WAN Guide

DD-WRT Dual Wan Guide v1.4.1

the following guides will show explain how to convert an ordinary linksys SOHO router into a powerful dual wan router/firewall with failover support, load balancing (download/upload), and a host of other features

Or am i not understanding correctly ? "No sarcasm intended"

you can only do it if youre in control of both sides of the link, or if your service provider is playing nice. Think about it..... youre trying to direct traffic thats already arrived.....

Ah yes i understand bit better now.. something i missed in the manual was ...

, keep in mind you will not see any increase in speed if a typical speedtest is run or normal web browsing. you will only be able to fully utilize this type of dual wan when using a download managers, torrents, or similar method that uses multiple threads to download & upload data. while it is possible to "double" the bandwidth typical results will be around 15-25% less the maximum depending on method chosen. true dual wan or bonding can only be accomplished with assistance from your local isp.

from my understanding it will only be to your advantage if you are using download managers with multiple threads active?

Wow.... that is pretty cool.

I heard once that you could plug a LAN cable from the WAN port in to any one of the other ports and turn the rest of the LAN ports in to wan ports. I think you would have to do the load balancing somewhere else though.

Yea - with the way Natting works, the traffic you send out the one port is gonna come back in by that same port, so if the two wrt's use a round robin fashio for sending out trequests then the replies will follows the same round robin route coming back. Traffic that goes out at line A comes back via LineA and the same for B

Zeroshell requires that you build a dedicated box for the task ..and there's nothing wrong with that, you get the kind of expandability/flexibility that a PC-based box can give you. But setting a WaRT up for WAN failover (something *very* dear to my heart atm) means you have an appliance that you feed with a 12V, 1Adc wall-wart ..and there is a LOT to be said for that option too!

You do realize how easy it is to run this device from a battery/battery charger setup? No need for an inefficient ups. Same battery will last much longer in this way than with a ups driving the router.

I borrowed a few ideas from this script when I wrote the traffic splitting script.

I was also thinking about this script the other day for 10Mb/s ADSL users to utilize 2x 4Mb/s Uncapped accounts (or maybe one (!?!) rather than pay a huge premium for a 10Mb/s account). Of course, rather than dual WAN it would be dual PPP, but the traffic management would be similar.
