Afrikaans Uber cars impounded

Afrikaans-focused e-hailing app Wanatu has temporarily halted its services after "unlawful" impounding of its vehicles by the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD).

Wanatu, which has operated in Pretoria and Centurion since October 2024, informed customers of the decision in SMSs and on its social media pages.
 
Well, the cars are clearly branded, so it's an easy target for the TMPD. Knowing which cars are Uber for example, is harder. So purely from that perspective I kinda get it. TMPD wants to show their taxi mafia overlords that they are enforcing the rules.

Not really, just have to look for Toyotas held together with duct tape and prayers.

On the off chance that they're wrong, they can still impound the cars for not being road legal.

If they were actually interested in doing their job, they could create uber accounts and check once the car shows up. Probably good to this anyway, have police check the papers of the driver and the car, maybe even for a short drive to audit the law adherence of the driver before telling them that you are police.

But, they aren't interested in keeping citizens safe, only interested in lining pockets and obeying commands.
