Can anyone suggest a simple basic stereo audio amplifer to take RCA stereo to the four speakers I have on the stoep? I'm looking for something really basic, with an on/off switch, volume control, and maybe treble & bass. Approx 120W power to drive 4 x JBL Control One speakers. Mostly for movies.

Check your local Cash-Crusaders/Cash-Convertors. They usually have a wide array of bog standard amps.

If it's just a bog standard setup then I can recommend a second hand Sansui amplifier - they're cheap but they certainly do the trick. There's no need to invest in a rack-amp for something like this.

The basic Sansui range usually had a switch at the back to sweep through ohmage depending on your speaker requirements and I had my Sansui for over 15 years without a single hiccup. Until of course the day it exploded, but that was more my fault than anything else...

Did you play Justin Beiber through it to make it explode? Or was it just overworked? Dont even know how I would go about making an amp explode....

I spilled water on the thing for the umpteenth time and figured it would just dry out on its own and be back to normal eventually. I then came home a little intoxicated and proceeded to switch the thing on without thinking. Needless to say, it fizzled and it banged...

None of the cheaper rebadged brands will do you any good. Stay away from Dixon, Ecco and the like that you find at Cash converters, they won't be able to power those speakers properly and will sound terrible.

You say stereo configuration with 4 speakers? I assume you just want to hook up two to each channel. If that's the case look for one of the mid range brands like Sansui, though don't expect that amp to power your speakers properly.

If you have the money and some luck, try look for an old NAD amp(I have two stereo ones, a 3020 and a 3140) and even though they're rated at 20w and 40w respectively they smack cheap brands out of the park in terms of power delivery and sound quality. Pioneer is also a good brand to look at. Budget around R500 - R1000 for one of these depending on how lucky you are.

With audio, if you buy sub standard(crappy) equipment, you'll often have to deal with sub standard(crappy) sound.

Also, "The weight is a sign of reliability." - Boris the blade. If you want a good quality, reliable amp, get something that's heavy.

+1 Bought a 400Watt (not PMPO) for R400 from one a while back. Gave it to my FIL, he uses it under his lapa with the laptop. Oh and it is 5.1

Was using an old hifi as an amp. Opened it up to fix a loose connection and ended up dropping my car keys on the main board a short while later while it was on...

What amp do you have for your home theatre setup?

I have a Harman Kardon AVR430 7.1 channel amp. I configured two surround channels as Zone 2 to drive a set of B&W book shelve speakers on my stoep. Works beautifully, don't need a second amp and you can switch to any source input. Can't you just do the same ?

Reminds me of Roy Buchanan
"To achieve his desired distorted sounds Buchanan occasionally used a razorblade to cut the speakers or even poured water over the tubes in his amplifers." :)
