Wanted compact camera for 12 year old

Sorry guys title clearly says compact camera, something portable and also easy to use. It’s her first camera so don’t want to buy new so she can learn.

All I'm saying is it's a bit gratuitous buying a compact camera this day and age vs something like a S8.

I agree, though aren't newer phones better like Hauwei P30 series?

Also, I assume it's for the 12 year old and not to take pics of the 12 year old?

Obviously. But just illustrating that the S8 will be just as decent as a dedicated compact camera.

I don't care how good the camera is in the phone, it is still a phone and not a camera. The whole process of taking a photo with a proper camera is different to taking photos with a phone. Buy a camera for photography and a phone for using it as a phone.

Don't get a small camera that isn't much different from a phone - get the best bridging camera or entry level DSLR you can afford. There are some good secondhand cameras for reasonable prices around, if you have the patience to look. For example I saw a Nikon D3200 for sale on FB last week for R4500.

You should look at a Panasonic Lumix, a Nikon D3100 -> D3500 (it's their range of entry level cameras. The D3100 is a few years old now, but still a good camera), Canon also have a reasonable range of bridging and entry level DSLR cameras. Sony and Pentax are worth a mention but you will struggle to find one at a good price in the SA market.

I know these will all seem like a lot of camera, but there is nothing more frustrating to a budding photographer of any age than advancing past the capabilities of the camera, and this happens really quickly. You need to get something that will take good photos (satisfying in and of itself) in auto mode, which then quickly encourages you to start playing with the other settings and learning. A bridging camera (lies between a point-and-shoot and a DSLR) is a good place to start. They are smaller than a DSLR, while having enough features to get you started on the journey as a photographer.

^^ This

I equate it to using a fax machine. Yes it looks very close, but you do see the difference.

@ZSAYED You would be looking for something like a Canon IXUS. they are great for youngsters with enough features for them to start experimenting with digital photography.

Thanks guys yes agree I can find plenty phones but my kid will just be like every other bored child just busy on their phones, a camera gives you that freedom and allows you to actually look for things to take photos of and hopefully also turn into a hobby. I started many years ago with a Fuji Finepix and have some good memories of going out and taking photos, I now have a DSLR but only learning still so it’s a basic one.

I have a FujiFilm Finepix S2995 of you would be interested?
Has camera bag, mem card, I think its a 2 gig. Need to see what else is in there, haven't used it for a while
