I'm looking to buy used/new Windows licenses, in bulk. I see in some countries the EULA for Windows XP Home and Professional Full Retail versions allows for a one time transfer to a third party. Not sure how it works for Vista or W7. I'm wondering what happens to licenses when companies downscale their operations or upgrade all their machines from XP to Vista/W7??

Any MS licensing boffs on the forum? Anyone with contacts to sellers?

Larger companies generally have subscription licensing so they are always licensed for the latest versions of MS products.

I think it's a different set of rules if you are selling on systems with the software on vs transferring ownership from one person to another (ie. giving an old notebook to a family member)

Volume licenses require a base license attached and cannot be transferred like you describe
OEM cannot be transferred without the original machine
Only transferrables are box sets

Thanks PsyWulf. I take it 'box sets' is defined as packaged software from a store or software distributed directly by Microsoft ? If so then license conditions permit a one-time transfer to a third party. The terms specify 'directly to a third party' so I suspect this precludes resale.

You can sell the boxed 7 package (retail) you bought, the new guy might have a bit of a pain activating but it's allowable

8 did mix up licensing a bit,so that's fluid
