So since Telkom is doing away with soft capping I am looking for an alternative ISP to sign up with. My only requirements are A: 512kbps (minimum, currently have "4"mbps) ADSL line with B: An international cap of 5GB and more if possible.

I would also prefer the options to include the whole line rental fee. My 2 options which I have found are:

http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/standard/

Looking at the shaped 10GB but I noticed it does not say anything about A: Line Speed and B: Local Cap?

http://www.saol.com/adsl1.php

Same goes for SAOL.

I wont be gaming that much online so shaped is fine for me. However I do enjoy the speed so that why I am only looking at 512 and higher.

Currently the dobroadband level 3 package is R554 without line rental (from what I can gather and remember from our Telkom bill).

What other options should I consider? Ideally I would love to get as far away from Telkom as possible eg: get no Telkom bill at the end of the month because phone calls will be made form cellphone.

Oh and I dont have Neotel or Iburst coverage. So far I am leaning on SAOL because they include the line rental in their bill.

In my opinion, it would better to keep the line rental with Telkom. That way you can always move ISP later, when something better comes up.

well you can get the complete package from webafrica aswell http://www.webafrica.co.za/adsl/complete/ but its R579 for a 4mb line excl phone line rental and only 3gb for now... so i think you'll still find the Do3 is still the cheapest option.

your speed will depend on the line you have now.. so 4mb. but remember if you only keep the line rental with telkom its going to be R413 just for the line and no data...

So from what I have read I still need to have phone line rental for ADSL even though I dont use a phone? Can I not cancel everything (ADSL&Phone) and reapply just for ADSL access? Reason for asking is because our phone bill is R700+- a month yet Do3 is advertised at R554 (and thats what I want to pay per month) so I am guessing the extra is normal telephone line rental?

You got it... hurts, but its true.... :p - Telkom is one of the only broadband providers in the world that still charges for ADSL Rental on top of Line Rental and BW. Go Go Gadget WTF

I think it is possible to cancel the "phone" part of the bill. Maybe phone/visit telkom and ask if it possible.

Another thing telkom also charges you for the amount of like line sockets/plugs you have in your house which is fail.

general equation

telkom = fail

Not going to happen.

To get an ADSL line, you need a non-prepaid phone line i.e. no phone line, no ADSL - sad but true...

From my understanding, you always need a Telkom line which (currently) has a fixed rental of R124.20 inclusive regardless of whether you actually use voice services or not. This is for the connection to the exchange and has no bearing on the ADSL portion. I have my own ADSL line directly with Telkom (not a bundle that ISPs now offer) and from the way I imagine, you will still need to pay this basic connection amount to Telkom but no more, the ADSL line rental is then paid to the ISP (who probably forwards it to you know who).

Correct me if I'm wrong!
