Warlock Help

DPS should be directly proportional to damage done on all fights, it follows that if you are constantly engaging the mob and doing damage, you will incur a damage per second amount, the higher this amount then the more damage you will do overall *if you are constantly engaging the mob*. Both dps and overall damage done take burst damage into account so that shouldn't be a contributing factor towards the argument. The only way that someone could have lower dps but higher damage done than someone else is if that someone else stopped dpsing, ran out of mana, etc. etc.

If you are measuring overall damage done, i.e. damage done over an entire raid then you are missing the point of raiding entirely. Every boss fight and trash pack (for the most part) in a raid is unique, with different tactics and requirements. You need to be able to adjust your strategy and pay attention when raiding to accomplish a spot in the top 5 on the dps meter on bosses, and you really have to know your stuff in order to do this consistently for every boss in the raid. This is what makes a good raider.

For example, the best warlock in our guild does not worry about topping the dps meters on trash, he tries to maintain aggro control and follow the kill order. On bosses he tops the dps meters, and I am talking 13k dps on Hodir. He is top dps for every boss fight, and top dps for the raid - in addition to this he also does the most damage for every boss and the entire raid.

I don't dispute that damage done isn't a factor, i just don't think it is anywhere near dps as a measurement for raiding proficiency. If someone can consistently maintain high dps in 15 different situations then I would say that they are a good player.

This is possible i agree, and theoretically it makes sense, im just not able to wrap my mind around it. We have locks that top the dps meters every single bossfight with around 5-6k (i look out of curiosity after each fight) as well as go all out on trash. Sometimes i reset before a trash pull to see and the ret pallies/rogues/mages/spriests are always top of the list then(most of the time). Mayb its their choice of AoE, mayb they are afraid of aggro, but at the end of the raid the locks always end up 5th to 6th on the meters with a measily 3.5-4k.

look at overall boss damage vs. total raid damage and the dps will be a different story i guess.

Probly - thats where people delve in to the whole WWS discussion tho. But its good, those facts dont lie. Now all we need is a website that tells u who is slacking and Yogg25 is ours! ;p

we are also on yogg 25 - should have him down soon.
whats your gear like? armory link?

trash is trash. Usually.

When we raid we dont even have the full raid involved in the trash. We invariably start the trash without the full raid online anyway.

After we down a boss, everyone moves on to clear trash, except the master looter, whoever will roll for the loot and at least 1 person to disenchant.

ofc., thats only where we have the instance on farm such naxx 25. On Uldar, some of the trash needs a bit of atttention :D, so ofc., common sense is applied, but the point is, its not the measure of your dps. 90% of the time, the mobs die too quickly. They dont last the duration of the first Dot, so how can you learn anything ? Let the retr paladins go nuts while leveling weapon skills, i say :D

i have a 70 demo lock - but not enjoying the build. im thinking about going affliction. is affliction more a DoT build?
