DPS should be directly proportional to damage done on all fights, it follows that if you are constantly engaging the mob and doing damage, you will incur a damage per second amount, the higher this amount then the more damage you will do overall *if you are constantly engaging the mob*. Both dps and overall damage done take burst damage into account so that shouldn't be a contributing factor towards the argument. The only way that someone could have lower dps but higher damage done than someone else is if that someone else stopped dpsing, ran out of mana, etc. etc.
If you are measuring overall damage done, i.e. damage done over an entire raid then you are missing the point of raiding entirely. Every boss fight and trash pack (for the most part) in a raid is unique, with different tactics and requirements. You need to be able to adjust your strategy and pay attention when raiding to accomplish a spot in the top 5 on the dps meter on bosses, and you really have to know your stuff in order to do this consistently for every boss in the raid. This is what makes a good raider.
For example, the best warlock in our guild does not worry about topping the dps meters on trash, he tries to maintain aggro control and follow the kill order. On bosses he tops the dps meters, and I am talking 13k dps on Hodir. He is top dps for every boss fight, and top dps for the raid - in addition to this he also does the most damage for every boss and the entire raid.
I don't dispute that damage done isn't a factor, i just don't think it is anywhere near dps as a measurement for raiding proficiency. If someone can consistently maintain high dps in 15 different situations then I would say that they are a good player.
