Warning about scammers impersonating Icasa

Cellphone number scam warning in South Africa

Scammers are impersonating the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (Icasa) in an elaborate scam through which they claim that your phone number has been used in banking fraud and to harass people.

A MyBroadband reader shared what appears to be a forged letter sent to them on an Icasa letterhead and featuring an electronic signature for Icasa chairperson Mothibi Ramusi.

What appears to be? WTF sends a letter to tell you they are doing something within two hours?
 
Easy scam to spot. Just look at the signature. This is the real one:

In the first world you can tell straight away that it's a scam from the poor grammar and spelling alone.

Unfortunately in South Africa our government's official communications are so chocked full of grammatical and spelling errors that it's hard to tell them apart from the scam letters.

Just read the reports on SAPS newsroom to see the low standard used.
 
One day you'll be old and vulnerable. I just hope I can replace whatever they take from me.
