WARNING! MS Office 2010 more expensive than 2007

I've been holding out on upgrading to Office 2007 (from 2003) because I heard that 2010 pricing will be 40% cheaper in SA. To my disgust I notice that there are no upgrade versions available any longer, everyone pays the same price :sick: The only temporary option is to buy the 2007 upgrade now and make use of the 2010 Technology Guarantee before 30 September 2010. Below is a comparison from Jump:

Microsoft Office Pro 2007 Win32 English Upgrade - R3,081.52 - R3,469.00
Microsoft Office 2010 Professional - R4,554.21 - R5,409.00

To all *nix and OO fans - some of us HAVE to buy Office in order to support our client base so don't proselytise on this thread ;)
 
Thats kind off like saying "Windows 7 is more expensive than Windows XP", or, "Gears of War 2 is more expensive than Gears of War 1".

I'm trying not to state the obvious. If you can buy 2007 and upgrade to 2010 for free, in all essence you get 2010 for the price of 2007 no? Which is R3,081.52 - R3,469.00, like you said. :confused:
 
New software is ALWAYS more expensive when just released. Best to wait six months until prices stabilise.

@ oronte, for one; their rediculous implementation of some dreamed up basic for macro scripting?

Any way, i'm bleak about this... as i have been running Outlook2010 Trial, and its a nice step up from 2007, the other products just have tighter Sharepoint Integration...

It seems strange that Windows 7 came down compared to XP/Vista, maybe they trying to push OEM Channels? (The OEM Office 2010 Pricing i have seen has been better than 2007)

For instance, I have a client that has a mission critical app that was developed in Access '97 a couple of years ago by another developer. I upgraded the db to Access 2003 5 years ago and has done about R80 000 worth of work on the db up to this point. To re-write this program using VS will cost R250K+, so we are stuck with following the Access upgrade path. Besides this particular client, ALL my other clients use MS Office without fail, except two NPO's which I set up with OO. A typical scenario is a client that phones and asks "How do do that again in Word?".

Windows 7 cost more than XP did when it was released. It took a few months before the two swapped places... and mostly only because XP was harder to find.

Gary, I'm pointing out the fact that there is no Office upgrade discount available any longer, I've been upgrading since '95 and now I have to pay the full price in the future (besides taking the limited upgrade guarantee window).
 
Yea, But who remembers buying that Black Box filled with Vista Ultimate "Awesome-ness" for like R4500? Win7 Ultimate is like R2800? yes i'm talking about RETAIL copies in both Instances...
Also the Home and Business Edition comes with POWERPOINT, at its price it seems to be replacing Office 2007 Basic, which didn't have powerpoint? better value, slightly higher price?

and yea Gary you are right, but (and yes i blame myself now) on reflection, comparing XP and 7 prices was a bit silly... :-D

atleast 7 is cheaper than XP NOW :D

Yep full versions. Sorry I ment to say that the above was for OEM versions. On the DSP versions, the price difference is +- R150. I will look on the partner site if there are upgrade options.

It's not for sale.

Why?

Because people who only use MS Word are prepared to pay the full package price.

There is a house and home version that should cost about a third or less than the price of Professional and half the price of Business. I have not checked if there is a stand alone Word version.
 
Why do you have to upgrade (apart from the dof docx problems)?
You have a working system and your customers want the eye-candy?
You have (and own) the working db and progs??

And yes, have a look at starting to convert your stuff to base or mysql

As I said earlier, re-writing the system will cost R250 000 regardless of what language is used, the code is the property of the client and there is a very limited market for re-selling. BTW, MySQL ahe?
