I'm looking at importing certain PC components from the US and am wondering about the warranty thing.

I know some manufacturers (Seagate etc) have global warranties but what does that mean?

Can I send it to Rectron to fix/replace it or do I have to send back to the US?

Also same situation with AMD CPU's which have a 3-year global warranty.

i think you should first check out the law with regards to importing goods i heard that if you import like 3 or 4 maybe more times then you can be charged for some tax or something like a fine

and also not all cpu's and part are aproved for S.A

Importing has nothing to do with warrantees.
Some manufacturers require that you send it back to them eg USA / Far east
or that you use their agents. Also some warrantees are only valid for one year in certain countries. Had this problem with a HDD should have been 3 years but local agent would only cover the first year and said they would send it back to factory at my expense.!

I got a colleague to buy me a Toshiba satellite laptop from the states in 1994, the screen went a bit funny nearly a year later and they honoured the 'worldwide warranty' that I paid a few dollars extra for, they paid for all shipping and the process was a pleasure.

I have also been required, by SARS customs, to apply for an import/export number because I have ordered online for hardware so many times. I've had no fines or other issues since I got the number, all that happens is DHL/FEDEX/etc will not release the goods till I quote the number to them.

And it's still a damn site cheaper to buy your hardware online from overseas vendors, even with the shipping costs.

Rectron will honor international warranties but obviously only on the products they sell.

I had a mate who bought a Leadtek A400 from UK and it went faulty, he went to Rectron and they shipped it back to Leadtek for him turnaround time was long though about 3 weeks.

I had a simular situation. Bought the TOshiba Satellite here in SA, It broke while I was overseas, Took it to the local toshiba dealer, and in 24 hours they had replaced the faulty mecury switch on the screen free of charge

a mercury switch on the screen? What does it do? *interesting*

Had me Baffled as well. I was told it had something to do with the switch that disables the screen when its closed but not turned off.. Of course it was as I had just arrived and my Russian comprehension and understanding was still pretty much non-existant and my Translator wasn't too good either at technical terms :) Though it would of seemed correct as the screen would work when it was closed.. and turned off when it was open

None the less though it was fixed without any costs involved in the middle of Siberia.

<3 Toshiba ever since!

Mercury switchs can be used nicely to blow up your neighbor when he opens his door at home  j/k

What I dont understand though is in principle it would also turn the monitor off if the laptop was flipped upside down? Still not sure if it was the right thing or the bad translation?

Sorry to bump this thread but....

I emailed Rectron with regards to imported AMD processors warranties and they [Rectron]won't honor the warranty if not bought from them.

So does anyone know any Service Providers that can fix and replace AMD CPU's? [For a fee of course]
